ISCSI Best Practices

Doesn anyone know where I can find a VMware ISCSI best practice guide?  They have NFS Best Practice Guides but not an ISCSI.  I downloaded the VMware ISCSI Guide, but I was hoping for a best practice guide.  If anyone knows where they have a guide please email me a link.  Thanks in advance.

The reason that there are choices is that there isn't one best. It will depend on your situation, SAN vendor, etc.

What does your SAN vendor have? I would start there.

For ISCSI which is the best "Load Balacing" type?

1.  Based on virtual port id

2.  Route based on IP hash

3.  Route based on MAC hash

4.  Use explict faliover.

You should use option 1, and then use MPIO to load balancing.  Don't try to use something designed for networking on your storage stack.

As already stated, check with your SAN vendor to get their best practices as they'll have the most appropriate guidance.  This is also a great post to help you with iSCSI on vSphere 4:

I tired, it was the EMC website which is a nightmare to surf...  I use FC and NFS for over 500 VM's.  But now we have a need for ISCSI for block level storage requirements.  The site where it will be implemented does not have any FC.  Therefore, I must use ISCSI.  I wias hoping to find a good guide.  But your right, I called my vendor and he sent me stuff from 2006/2007.  Which is no help.

Hi,

Your best option is "none of the above".

Look for the various iSCSI multipathing guides out there.
