CPU Question - Cores\Sockets Optimum Configuration

Hello,

We are running non-persistent VMs and currently running into some CPU performance issues. Had a general question regarding Cores\Sockets.

Currently we are configuring VMs with 2 cores and 2 sockets. Is there any advantage to using 1 socket and 4 cores? Or 4 sockets and 1 core? Is one configuration more optimum then the other?

Thank you!

There is no* performance difference between those both variants.  The options exists because of Guest/App licensing and limitations.

  1. An MS GuestOS supports a max. of 2 socket
  2. There might be Apps which lizenced to sockets rather than Cores.

* As long as you stay within a NUMA Node which means your VM with CPU and MEM fits on a pyhs. socket. Because of today CPU are based on chiplets and glued together a NUMA bondary can be smaller than expect. In those cases you may should adjust the vNUMA.
