Any values in enabling Virtual Flash Resource?

Hi all,

Maybe a silly question... maybe not...

I'm debating whether I should or should not enable the Virtual Flash Resource, and whether it adds any value.

Server spec:

DELL T640, PERC H740P RAID controller, 16 x SAMSUNG 870EVO 6Gbps SATA SSD

The server has no mechanical hard disk. The cache policy on the RAID controller is enabled and disabled on each of the SSD unit sides.

So here come the questions...

  1. As my entire storage runs on SSD, the read-write performance should be direct and to their optimum state, unlike the scenario of using a mechanical hard disk, the Virtual Flash Resouce is there to cache and offset the latency/delay of any mechanical activities of a traditional mechanical drive, I really doubt if enabling the Virtual Flash Resouces in my environment is superfluous.
  2. My second thought about enabling the Virtual Flash is that data read/write from SSD is first moved to the VFFS volume before actual access. In theory, this adds an extra unnecessary step in contrast to direct SSD read/write access, which, I think could potentially cause performance impact.

Would love to hear other opinions on these points.

Cheers!
