P2V Linux? If so How?

Hi, I was under the impression that p2v for red hat linux was still unsupported. Is this still the case? If not, how is it done? do i have to use a live CD or can it be done remotely, like windows?

thanks for your help.

It depends on what you mean by "red hat". If you mean the older consumer-level red hat (versions 1-9) then Converter does not support this. If you mean RHEL 2.1, 3, 4, 5, then yes, Converter Standalone 4.0 supports Linux P2V of these machines.

Yes, im refering to RHEL 5, I was just not sure if i was able to do this remotely or it i needed to use a live CD, or install an agent on the source server first.

There is a live CD, but we deploy it automatically, and there is no "source agent" needed on the source machine itself. (Though we have one co-located with the Converter Server, as you can see from the processes and log files.)

You do not need to install an agent, and most probably do not need to use the cold boot CD

Choose "powered on machine"

Give it root credentials to access the machine

and start the conversion process

so you are telling me that you use the converter to P2v RHEL just as you would a windows server and it works fine straight out the box with no down time?

Correct. You might run into some issues with the disk configuraton if you are using LVM, but if so the blog post mentioned in this thread will help you out.

For hot cloning of Linux you must use vCenter Converter Standalone, otherwise you have to use a Live CD.

Check out this (this is in spanish, but the screenshots are useful):
