FAILED (95%): Unable to find the system volume, reconfiguration is not possible.

Hello,

I'm trying to virtualize a physical machine to my VMware infrastructure. I've success to do it for another machine, but this time it crashes.

Here are the characteristics:

Software: VMware Converter 4.0.1 standalone client

Machine: Microsoft Windows Server 2003 SP1 Enterprise with Exchange 2003

Discs: 2*80 GB disks used in software mirror RAID 1 (2 partitions C: and 😧 cross over the two discs)

VMware Farm: ESXi 4.1

Configuration of the converter: http://image.bayimg.com/faackaadc.jpg

I try to convert the machine but I get the following message "FAILED: Unable to find the system volume, reconfiguration is not possible." at 95% in the reconfiguration step (it create only one vmdk).

From my research, it is probably due to software mirror, which implies dynamic disks.

But I must not modify the physical machine, I have to migrate the machine as it is without changing it.

A machine appears well in vCenter. When I started it, it does not boot. With QParted I have enabled the "boot" flag. Now the machine boots, but I get immediately a blue screen, even in safe mode. ( http://image.bayimg.com/faacaaadc.jpg )

I added the vmdk to another machine, and run diskmgmt.msc to convert dynamic disc to basic disc, but it saw basic disc already.

Here the initial configuration of disks: http://image.bayimg.com/eaacoaadc.jpg

Attched files: boot.ini and logs

What can I do to convert my machine ?

Thanks you and sorry for my english

Bonjour,

J'essaie de virtualiser une machine physique vers mon infrastructure VMware. J'ai déjà réussi a le faire pour d'autre machine, mais celle-ci ça bloque.

Voici les caractéristiques :

Logiciel: VMware converter 4.0.1 standalone client

Machine: Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Enterprise SP1 avec Exchange 2003

Disques: 2 disques de 80 Go utilisés en mirroir logiciel RAID 1 (2 partitions C: et 😧 croisées sur les deux disques)

Ferme VMware: ESXi 4.1

Configuration de la conversion : http://image.bayimg.com/faackaadc.jpg

J'essaie de convertir la machine mais j'obtiens le message suivant "FAILED: Unable to find the system volume, reconfiguration is not possible."

Merci

Have you tried

Try the "configure machine" option of Converter against the vmx-file you already have.

_________________________

Hi

so you can already boot the VM into a bluescreen 7b ?

Thats good - so then you still have to adjust the drivers only.

Try the "configure machine" option of Converter against the vmx-file you already have.

Hi,

I can boot the VM, but cause BSOD. I can boot it because I set the boot flag for the first partition of the only disk.

It crashes because Windows don't find the second disk for the mirror. As the previous screenshot, the first partition of the first disk is mirrored with the second partition of the second disk, the second partition of the first disk is mirrored with the first partition of the second disk... I think, can't simply copy the vmdk and add it into the VM as second disk (cause of cross-mirror and disk IDs ?).

I don't know if is a problem of disk drivers. Originally was WDC WD800JD-00LUA0 (SATA). VMware Converter ask me to unzip the sysprep cab file for Windows Server 2003 SP1.

I want the detail this : the guest OS is Microsoft Windows Server 2003 SP1, 32 bits, French version.

You advise me to do :

- download the vmx and vmdk files into my PC (done)

- convert the vmx file into Workstation 6.5 VM (done)

- create new directory with different name (done)

- upload the Workstation 6.5 into the new directory (in progress)

- add the vmw into the inventory (waiting)

- start the VM (waiting)

I didn't understand, the "Configure machine" button, i was looking for "Configure machine" into dropdown in "Convert machine" source type... so I've just tried it :

- Configure machine

- Select the VM directly in the VMware infrastructure

- Let all options checked by default

- Set new name for the computer, domain name... without check for generate new GUID

- Run the VM

The VM success to run. Thank you ! I have to re-activate it, but it's a little problem.

It is currently installing drivers en sysprep executing...

I think, problem solved !
