FT Question regarding different CPU speed

Hello,

I am about to configure a new ESX-Cluster with the below differences only on the CPUs.

Server-A has the X5550 CPUs

Server-B has the E5520 CPUs

See below exact details. CPUs are of the same family the only differences are the GHz and the QPI Speeds.

Processor Number

Intel® QPI Speed

L3 Cache

Processor Base Frequency

Max Turbo Frequency

Power

Number of Cores

Number of Threads

X5550

6.4 GT/s

8 MB

2.66 GHz

3.06 Ghz

95 W

8

E5520

5.86 GT/s

8 MB

2.26 GHz

2.53 Ghz

80 W

My questions is if it's possible to configure FT on VMs using the above CPU differences?

If anyone knows is it supported by VMware.

Thanks in advance

Hello.

You will be supported with that config, as both procs are in the Intel Xeon based on Core i7 Microarchitecture Category. Check out kb 1008027 for the details. There is also some really good information in the "[The Design and Evaluation of a Practical System for Fault-Tolerant Virtual Machines|http://www.vmware.com/resources/techresources/10134]" technical paper that explains how the processor frequency differences are handled.

Good Luck!
