Thanks for the info. I'm sorry to hear it too but, it makes sense. I may submit it as a feature request. It definitely creates issues when you have a View VM set to allow 2 displays on the backend but, connect with the client from a system running 3 or more. It'd be nice if you could change the display topology with policy or a command line switch.

Thanks again.

Hi All,

Was hoping someone could give me a hand. I'm working with a couple users with unique monitor requirements. They want to be able to have a single thin client with 3 monitors attached. Then, they want to be able to launch two separate VMs, each using only 2 of the 3 monitors.Basically they want to be able to have one VM running on the left and center monitor and the second VM running on the right and center monitor.

I have my VMs set to use 2 displays but, when they launch they will only go to 1 monitor. If I up the VMs to allow for 3 displays the VM will span all 3 monitors. That would be fine but, when I try to disable the 3rd monitor within the VM it doesn't hold the setting. Once I say 'keep settings' the 3rd monitor loads back in.

We're running PCoIP, Horizon View 6.

Any help would be great.

I've seen similar behavior. What platform are you running your View Client on? I was running HP T620s (thin clients with WES7) with dual cores and would see sluggishness with dual monitors. Been testing with the quad core edition the past week and there is a noticeable improvement. Especially when streaming video and scrolling in graphics intensive websites.

In View 5.2 and above we have the option to assign network labels to a Desktop Pool, allowing for a single parentvm that is then assigned to the correct vLan/s based on the pool it is provisioned under. I've followed all of the steps here (VMware View 5.2 Documentation Library) and my test pool shows the correct value for the 'NetworkLabelSpecs' property. However, when I provision a new VM in that pool, it is not being assigned to the correct network label and when I get properties of the new VM its 'NetLabelAutoAssigns' property is listed as 'disabled'.

Has anyone seen this? Do I need to make a change to the parent VM for the newly provisioned VMs to receive the correct assignments?

Any help would be great.

Properties of newly provisioned VM:

vm Unfortunately, when we specify another non-all monitor option with GPO or command line it grays out the option for other display layouts. If I could set the default and allow users to select another option, if they would like, that would be great.

Have you seen different behavior with the 3.0 client?

Thanks again

3.0 Client - Set default desktop layout to Full Screen, not All Monitors

In the 3.0 client it appears the default display layout is 'All Monitors'. I can set 'FullScreen' through the 'desktopLayout' switch but, when I do that, all other options are grayed out. I would like to be able to set 'Full Screen' as the default option but, allow users to select 'All monitors' if they would like to do so.

In the 5.4 client 'Full Screen' is the default layout.

I've also opened a ticket with VMware. Their initial response was to use the 'scripting definitions' policies in the client adm file. But, this results in the same behavior as the /desktoplayout switch, all other options grayed out. They then mentioned that the 5.4 client will save the last selection for desktop layout. This also doesn't happen on the 3.0 client.

Update:

Also, found that if you don't use any command line switches or Scripting Definition settings in GPO, the client will use the prefs.txt file at 'c:\users\%username%\appdata\roaming\VMware\VMware Horizon View Client' to retain the settings of your last connection. However, as soon as a command line switch or GPO is used the client no longer uses this prefs.txt file and previous settings are not retained. That is why I'm seeing the client always revert to 'All Monitors.' For my environment I have to use the switches.

It appears this is all by design but, it's very frustrating. I wish they would have left 'full screen' as the default option, as it is in the 5.x clients or at least give us a way to set the default selection but leave the option to select another display layout when needed.

If you're using windows embedded standard 7 there is a new policy in SP1 that allows you to handle this:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh505826(v=winembedded.60).aspx

If you're using the HP Thin Clients there's an easy fix here:

http://h20566.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/template.PAGE/public/psi/swdDetails/?sp4ts.oid=5226817&spf_p.tpst=swdMain&spf…

Hope it helps.

In-case you're still working on this I thought I should mention; there is a public key for vCNS 5.1.2 basic that gives you the vShield 5.0.2 capabilities with the vCNS 5.1.2 appliance. I wasn't able to find it on the site by searching but, a tech provided me with a link.

I actually just ran in the same issue. I have 5.0.2 licenses as well and attempted to downgrade. I was able to get it set up but immediately began receiving errors when attempting to deploy new vApps. I spoke with support this morning and they informed me that vShield Edge 5.0.2 is not compatible with vCloud Director 5.1. It's only compatible with vCD 1.x. vCloud Network and Security 5.1.x is needed for vCD 5.1.

I converted from Lab Manager. I'm going to try to get my Edge 5.0.2 licences converted to vCNS 5.1.2. They say you need to have the Edge 5.0.2 licenses and the Edge vApp licenses to make the trade but, that doesn't seem right since I'm converting from Lab manager and just want the same functionality I had before.

@continuum - Could you point me to a guide for presenting SAN storage to ESXi 5.0 running as a VM? The hosts are connected via a fiber switch. I don't understand how to present the stoarge to the VM if it doesn't have an HBA connected to the switch. Any help would be great.

Unfortunately, I can't. These are production systems that are being taken in to the lab for patching, testing, etc.

Also, being production systems I'd rather not install the whole converter application locally. I try to keep the impact on the production systems to a minimum. I really don't even like installing the converter agent on the systems if I can avoid it.

Thanks again for your help, though. But, in my bullet points I said:

"I have this problem when converting Symantec BESR 2010 SP1 images and

also when using the Converter Agent and performing a V2V of the live

system"

So, I only posted one screenshot because outside of the 'Source' information the behavior is identical.

Hello,

Thanks for your response.

In my original post I mentioned: "I should note, I manage our lab environment which is at ESX 4.1.

It is not integrated with the production network which is running 4.0.

This is why I need to perform conversions rather than just cloning the

VM."

So, that's why I'm using Converter to move the VMs. If you have a better suggestion, outside of integrating the two ESX infrastructures, I'd be happy to hear it. The process was a pain even before these problems came about.

Also, thanks for the suggestion on 4.3. I opened a service ticket with VMware back on 8/24/10 and have been talking with them ever since (got an email from them this morning actiually). They didn't mention that a new version of converter was released on 8/30/10. So, I didn't think to check.

Unfortunately, I have the same result with 4.3 (see attachment). Any thoughts?

Thanks again!
