I found the same issue, And we cannot copy VMDK on Esxi host. Could VMware supporter help to check this issue?

I got the same issue, the issue happened on Unbuntu 20.04 and kernel 5.8. I didn't found the issue on Ubuntu 18.04, 16.04

Cannot open disk with mode independent persistent

When I use the vddk7.0.3 to Open disk with mode "independent persistent", but I got the error
