I understand that a Windows VM created on an Intel Mac will not work if copied to an Apple Silicon Mac. I have a few questions.

1. This means I must create a new Windows VM from scratch on the Apple Silicon Mac, yes?

2. What does this mean in terms of Windows licensing? My current VM started life as a (completely legal and licensed) Windows 7 install. That was then upgraded to Windows 10 back when one could do that for free. Then, just recently, I upgraded the OS on the VM to Windows 11, again for free. Do I need to buy a new Windows 11 license, or is there a way to use my current, but older license? (I don't know if it would be useful, but I still have copies of the VMs running older versions of Windows.)

I use Fastmail as my email provider, which requires a manual setup in Outlook.

When I use Outlook 365 on my host Mac, I can establish a connection with Fastmail. I initiate setting up a new account, enter my Fastmail email address, specify I want to set it up manually, enter my app-specific password, and Outlook correctly sets up a new IMAP account.

On the guest Windows 10 machine I go through the same steps, but Outlook fails to create the account, terminating with the error message "Something went wrong and Outlook couldn't set up the account."

Since it works on the host, clearly it isn't because my credentials are invalid.

I definitely have a working network connection, because I can surf with a browser, connect to Windows Update, etc.

Any ideas about why Outlook 365 run on a Windows 10 guest wouldn't set up an IMAP account?

This did not work for me.

My VM started as a Win7 x64 system, and then when Win10 came out, I took advantage of the free upgrade to upgrade to Win10. So I don't have the ability to change the firmware type from within Fusion's settings.

I did the mbr2gpt changes, and added firmware="efi" to the .vmx file.

After spinning for a bit, I got this error message:

Operating System Not Found

Check your Startup Disk in the virtual machine settings. If you have not installed an operating system yet, you can choose an installation disc or disc image in the CD/DVD settings and restart the virtual machine.

When I first boot the guest, the VMWare screen shrinks to about a 3"x3" square (just as happens with my Windows 10 VM). Unlike the Win 10 VM, with my Mojave VM, the VMWare window stays at the small size after the VM finishes booting. At that size, the resolution is great...matches my 27" iMac. But if I resize the VMWare Fusion window, it grows proportionally (aspect ratio preserved), but, unlike the case with the Win 10 VM, it doesn't "flash" back to the correct resolution. In System Prefs-->Display, only the 1024x768 resolution is there.

Anything else to try?

Well, it's accurate to say "welcome BACK to the Fusion community," because I went over to the "dark side" (Parallels) for a few years before returning recently (I had a problem 3 years ago with a VM that I couldn't troubleshoot and somehow the process of importing it into Parallels seemed to fix it). I've always had a slight preference for Fusion, and decided to come back when Fusion 8 came out.

There's no error message, just no internet connection.

After fooling around for a while, I did come up with a workaround, though I never did figure out what the problem was. I noted what the static IP address was while still in Parallels, reset the Parallels VM to DHCP, imported into Fusion, and then reset the network connection to static. That seemed to work for me.

Thanks for your reply.

Same symptom.

Odd.

I have an XP VM that's been running on a MacBook under Fusion 3.1.3.

I just bought a new MacBook Pro, bought and installed Fusion 4.1.1, and I'm having trouble getting the VM to start.

1. I shut down the VM in version 3.1.3 on my MacBook.

2. I copied the Virtual Machines folder (containing the VM) to the MacBook Pro

3. I fired up Fusion 4, it asked me whether I wanted to upgrade the VM, I said "yes", and then I said "I copied it" when that question came up (I also have tried "I moved it," but the results are the same

4. The VM boots and I put my password into the XP VM, and then it took about 5 minutes to come up with the XP desktop.

5. The VM is virtually unresponsive. Whenever I try to click somewhere, it can take from 1 to 10 minutes for the click to be recognized. I've tried both the built in trackpad and a USB mouse.

I'm flummoxed here. I've successfully upgraded a different VM from version 3 to version 4 (on a different computer), without any problem.

I've allocated 2GB to the VM, and I have 12GB on the MacBook Pro, so memory should not be an issue.

The MacBook Pro is running Lion 10.7.3. The VM was originally created years ago under Fusion 1.x, then upgraded progressively to 2.x and 3.x and now 4.x. I've had no problem with earlier upgrades.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I'm running Fusion 4.1.1 on a MacBook Pro under Snow Leopard 10.6.8. There are two users set up on the Mac. If I run Fusion when logged into one of the Mac users and the switch away from that user to the other user (if the other Mac user is logged in) using "Fast User Switching" I get no mouse on the Mac side! I can get the mouse back by using the keyboard to call up the "Force Quit Applications"...I don't actually have to force quit anything....just calling up that dialog seems to "reset" the Mac so it recognizes the mouse.

This is on a MacBook Pro, and both the trackpad and connected USB mouse are either both active or both inactive.

Anyone have any experience with this and can propose a solution other the kludge of calling up the "Force Quit" apps item?

Re: VM Fusion, Mac OS 10.7 (Lion), Mac OS 10.6 (anything with Rosetta)

Yes, Rosetta is a technology that allows applications written for the Power PC CPU to run on modern macs with Intel processors.

Given your level of expertise you may want to seek some assistance with this...

There are a variety of ways of running both Lion and Snow Leopard.

Here's the simplest one I can think of for someone who isn't too technically inclined...

Method 1: (Doesn't involve Fusion)

Buy an external hard drive

Use a "cloning solution" (such as SuperDuper! or CarbonCopyCloner) to copy your entire drive to the external drive

After checking that you are able to boot from the external drive, upgrade your internal hard drive to Lion

This way, every time you need to run the legacy app in Rosetta, you'll need to boot up from your external drive

Method 2: (Fusion) (this is harder)

Keep your internal hard drive with Snow Leopard and install a Lion client in Fusion using the information here: http://communities.vmware.com/message/1858249

This way, you'll be able to run Lion as a virtual machine and have access to Snow Leopard and Lion at the same time, without rebooting. Note though that the virtual Lion client won't run as quickly/well as if it were installed without virtualization.

Unfortunately, as has been discussed here a great deal, it is NOT possible to install a virtual machine using Snow Leopard client (normal version), because it violates Apple's licensing agreement.
