PDF Lab Manuals
VMware Learning Platform now supports the PDF document format for student lab manuals. This feature enables content creators to use external authoring tools to develop lab manuals for use in VMware Learning Platform. In addition, it provides customers who have preexisting content an additional import option. Go to Lab Management > Lab Resources > Create Lab Resource.

Detailed Billing
The new billing dashboard provides granular usage metering of on-demand service usage. This dashboard enables Tenant Administrators to optimize usage of the service to help control cost. The new billing dashboard is available in the Tenant Management module > Billing.

Lab Replication
With replicas, a Tenant Administrator can easily and reliably replicate vApp Lab Templates within the same region or to other geographical regions throughout the cloud. This feature helps enable several key use cases including distributing templates for high availability, remote backups, and improving performance for students by providing labs in-region.

Create User during Entitlement Creation
This functionality introduces the ability to create a user during the entitlement creation process, without the need for the user to register for or create an account in VMware Learning Platform. This feature can be useful in one-time lab use situations, or to provide a quick hands-on demo without having the user go through the standard registration process.

Class Self-Registration
Instructors now have the capability to enable a class for student self-registration. This feature is advantageous in scenarios where an instructor may not have the student roster well in advance of a scheduled class. During class creation the instructor simply configures the number of seats the class is intended to support, and then provides their students with a self-registration URL. No account creation is required beforehand.

Remember to keep a lookout for the new Admin User Interface if you aren’t already using it, as the old UI will be deprecated within the next few weeks!

pdf manual support with VLP

We are happy to introduce pdf manual support with VMware learning Platform. A manual in VLP can be created using screen-steps, Microsoft word import and a raw pdf.

Steps to enable pdf manual:

Upload a pdf to lab resources in tenant admin
Select the pdf resource in the lab (Make sure there is no manual attached to lab)
Start the lab and the pdf will be rendered within the manual itself.

VMware LEarning Platform: Compatibility checker

VMware Learning Platform is a cutting edge application that uses some newer features that may not be supported by your browser. VLP gives an option to run a compatibility check when user starts the lab.

This can be enabled by tenant administrators from Tenant Settings -> General options – “Auto run compatibility checker when user starts the lab”. If enabled, when a user starts a lab, the system prompts the user to choose whether to run a compatibility check. When run, the compatibility check shows and saves a report.

Below parameters are verified when a Compatibility check is run by a user:

Cookies are a basic feature of the web used on most web sites. This application uses cookies to keep you logged in and track your active session.
Web Storage (localStorage and sessionStorage) an HTML5 feature that provides the ability to store some semi-persistent information on your computer. Web Storage is used throughout the application to save information that improves your experience.
Canvas is an HTML5 feature that enables dynamic generation of images in your browser. This application requires Canvas. This application requires Canvas.
WebSocket is an HTML5 feature enables websites to communicate over a full-duplex network channel. This application requires WebSockets.
A Web Proxy is a server that acts as an intermediary for requests from clients (browsers) seeking resources from other servers. This application works best when a web proxy is not used.

Supported Browsers:

- Safari 6+

- Microsoft Edge

Supported Devices:
- Apple iPad

Bandwidth:

The speed test will help us evaluate any potential performance issues you are having with VMware Learning Platform that may be related to network bottlenecks. The test will be run three times, connecting to a different server each time. It first tests latency (network delay) and then speed (network bandwidth).

Recommended Scores

Latency - A good latency score would be less than 300 ms; the lower the better

Speed - A good speed score would be greater than 1.5Mb/s; the higher the better

VMware Learning Platform: SpeedTest and Troubleshooting Console Slowness

Although the VMware Learning Platform (VLP) has been optimized for world class performance, sometimes users could experience slowness due to latency in their network.

Students can use VLP’s built in Speedtest tool, and Tenant Administrators can enable Console connection monitoring to narrow down the issue.

The speed test can be accessed from below location (use applicable tenant name):

http://learningplatform.vmware.com/tenant_name/speed-test/

If you are experiencing any issues, please do the below in an effort to alleviate:

Clear your browser cache and cookies.
Pause / avoid using high bandwidth consuming applications like Video streaming, web conferencing, downloads, system updates, etc.
If you are on a wireless network and there are potential issues due to range, try switching to a LAN (wired) network.
Disconnect from any VPN network (if applicable).

VMware Learning Platform Drag and Drop Feature

VMware Learning Platform now has a drag and drop feature. The feature allows an end-user, someone taking Lab, to drag text from the lab’s instructional manual and drop it into a field in the lab console.

To use the Drag/Drop feature:

Select some text in the manual. The Grab icon appears.
Drop the text into the appropriate lab console.

Consider, the following example from HOL Lab: HOL-2085-01-EMT - VMware Learning Platform - Interactive Quick Demo on page no. 16, the manual instructs the end user to “LOG INTO USER INTERFACE”. Using Drag/Drop you can simply drag your username (user@vlp.com) from the manual and drop it into the username field on the lab console and likewise, drag your password (VMware1!)and drop it into the password field.

What is needed to run a virtual Classroom

To run/host a virtual classroom (at different Geo locations) we need :

Virtual machines (subscription of Private / Public Cloud)
Lab manuals (a content management software)
Hire Development team for : creating virtual Class, Adding students to Class, Keeping track of students entitlements (database) and maintenance.
Hosting the services on a web server (Clustered environment for High Availability)

New Feature alert: Console Connection Monitoring

We have added a new feature that shows the health of lab console connections. Enabling this feature will help customers to determine the console connection strength of the lab they are connected to. VLP will be able to determine the ping latency between the end user’s device and the hosted VM in the cloud that they are connecting to.

The information can also help administrators to troubleshoot any lag or connectivity issues a user might experience in real time.

Tenant admins can enable this feature in two steps:

Step 1: Enable console connection monitoring for VLP.
From the VLP Admin UI, select Tenant Management -> Tenant and click on your tenant name. Click Interface on the Update tenants page and check the Console Connection Monitoring option.

Step 2: Enable console connection monitoring for the cloud organization.

From the VLP Admin UI, select Cloud Management-> Clouds and click on the cloud where your labs are deployed. On the Edit Cloud Org tab, check Console Connection Monitoring.

After this feature is enabled, the students/user console displays the connection strength, from which you can monitor the console latency:

The tenant administrators, can see the console benchmarks for active entitlements (once they are saved after a "leave") and transcripts. In the list pages there is a new column that looks like this:

Each session has the average, high, and low latency values as well as the reason for "leaving" the lab. When clicked or initiated from the item's "..." (three vertical dots) menu, a timeline view is shown that looks like this:

We have added new API's to:

1. Create/Edit/Add/remove labs from catalogs.

2. vApp Admin - Listing Cloud Vapps and prepops.

3. Cloud Shadow API calls - List orgVdcs/vAppTemplates for the specified cloudOrg. The return body will include orgVdcs, vAppTemplates and lastUpdated properties

Our current VCS environment each one of our classes that use the environment is setup as a tenant. Would our institution be setup as a single tenant or could we still create a multi-tenant environment?

Currently these would need to be separate tenants. We do have some items in our development backlog that would allow you to have one parent tenant and then subtenants underneath that. One of the use cases here was a University with all of the different Colleges, etc. It is in our development scope.

Are there any restrictions? (Such as number of networks, internet access from the VMs, firewall, or otherwise?)

The only limitations for your vApps are what vCD can support when the vApp is deployed. Right now we don’t change networks or anything on deployment so the vApp would have to be deployed straight from the catalog with the correct settings. Most of our tenants set their vApps up to be identical and do allow outbound Internet from the VMs.

At what level is the environment being managed?

What will be required of the customer technically to access the VLP service?

A modern web browser will be needed. The NEE “engine” and front-end is SaaS and is hosted by VMware. The cloud resources for the beta will also be hosted by VMware. In the past when we’ve setup internal tenants, they’ve been running courses within an hour of us handing over their credentials.

If I have my own cloud, what setup will I need to do for VMware Learning Platform to be able to connect?

There are a few setup items you will have to complete prior to connecting to VMware's Learning Platform (VLP):

Ensure that the address and port 443 of your API interface is on the public wire. This will probably require some coordination from your network team. The best way to test is to go to the following address from *outside* of the network:

https://<your_cloud_host>/api/versions. If you get back a long XML document that starts with this line then you’re good: <SupportedVersions xmlns="http://www.vmware.com/vcloud/versions" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.vmware.com/vcloud/versions http://<some_ip>/api/versions/schema/versions.xsd”> If you get an error or page not found or some other network error then the API interface is not properly exposed to the Internet.

Add the following 2 lines to the configuration file on each of the vCloud Director cells.

consoleproxy.websockets.enabled = trueconsoleproxy.securenio.buffer.size = 17000 The full path to the file is $VCLOUD_HOME/etc/global.properties

Restart the vCloud Director cell. Your vCloud Director should be ready to accept a connection from NEE.

Note these other considerations: You have setup a vApp and put it in the catalog as a template.
