Hi, I'm not sure if anyone can help at all, im not overly strong in the networking side of vSphere but my question is, with regards to distributed switches, is there a way to create a nic team from seperate hosts in a cluster?

e.g.

1 X port ESXi1

1 X port ESXi2

1 X port ESXi3

the reason i ask is we currently route some VLAN's down a singular cable per host (due to nic limitations on physical tin) therefore we have a singular point of failure should a nic fail on that host.

What i would like to do is team nics across the cluster to allow a vm to access any accessible port that is available from within the team.

If this isn't possible is there a policy somwhere that will detect link failure and automatically migrate the VM to another host in the cluster?

Thanks in advance.

i suppose the first thing i would do would be to ssh in to the VCSA and find out what was using the allocation, potentially a vimtop z could help point you in the right direction to troubleshoot further by sorting processes by memory usage. I don't have experience in deploying tiny so i'm not sure if this is a common pitfall with the deployment.

I believe we went to 3d with no issues.

Since then we see the message below which is the same message you see. Since 3d we have reverted back to Baselines as we did previously.

Hope this helps.

Hi Yes, this is my situation

And could I confirm these things?

1. Is the vMotion for single or dual VMs between DCs working correctly?

Single and dual vm vMotion is working correctly - any more than this and it sticks on "validating"

2. Did you reboot your vCenter Server?

vCenter has been updated and performed reboot as part of this process previously and still not working

3. Did you restart hostd/vpxa in each ESXi hosts?

Hosts have been rebooted, services restarted

4. Did you reboot your ESXi hosts?

Yes hosts have been rebooted (cold reboot)

Very Strange indeed.

Not really vmware solution but we've implemented Grafana and Influxdb (all free) and i've used a basic "config template" to pull service metrics from VM's critical VM's etc. This includes autostart windows services. It will involve a little bit of work but is well worth the time investment in my opinion - you can create dashboards to allow for an overview of the health of the environment as well as create alerts which can be email, slack etc to notify you when a service has stopped or any other metric for that matter including, cpu disk etc. We use it quite a lot for SQL instances, mid tier applications, AIX even down to DC environmental monitoring.

Below is a quick screen grab of just a part of the dashboard we created (unfortunately the rest has server names etc so can't be shared)

Again this isn't really a vmware solution but it does solve the "quick view of whats up" problem we had where we had a team of people checking services each morning. This is live and should a service go down the status changes in real time which is handy as previous attempts relied on a scheduled email of status which although useful in some ways was very limited in being responsive outside of the scheduled email time.

Hope this helps

I've suggested this in a previous post to a different poster but it might be relevant. It would involve a little bit of work but could prove useful if you wanted to tailor it.

Jorge de la Cruz has created a mini series on various dashboards and integrations with Grafana. this is a dashboard (all free) and reporting tool (Influxdb) which scrapes metrics from vcenter, vsphere, esxi etc. tags can be added and also if the storage is presented from a windows fileshare for example then the reporting tool can also be used on Windows servers to monitor "metrics from within Windows itself" if that makes sense?

A link to the datastore dashboard is below if you want to take a look,

https://grafana.com/grafana/dashboards/8162-vmware-vsphere-datastore/

Hope this may be of some use.

This may be more than you are looking for but i started on a similar path as you, looking at writing a script and stumbled across a blog written by Jorge De La Cruz and how he used Grafana, Influxdb to monitor vmware. It looked interesting so i thought i'd have a look at implementing the solution. Going slightly off topic but since this little forray in to Grafana we've expanded what we monitor with it.

But... Back to the question. The process would involve setting up a VM and following the tutorial on the blog but could be well worth it if your looking for a dashboard style reporting and monitoring tool.

If not then another option maybe to look at the .json files and have a look at the scripting he has used to pull metrics from vcenter and see if that can help you put the sense back in to the metrics.

Link to his dashboard is below but a quick google can also bring up what you might need.

https://grafana.com/grafana/dashboards/2840

Hope this helps.

in the settings you should be able to select "Client Device".

Once selected open up a VMRC connection and use the menu in the top left to follow the path below:

Once you select this you are presented with an Explorer where you can select the ISO mounted as a DVD drive locally.

Hope this helps

Live Migration of VM's stuck on "validating"

Hi,

I have a strange one, when selecting more than 2 VM's from a host and trying to perform a live migration of VM's i am unable to move past the "validating" spinning circle, the problem seems to be mainly when migrating between DC's. This function has always worked previously so i'm not sure why the issue has suddenly arrose. The Hosts in question are all in the same EVC mode and have been in place for a few years with no changes really being made to them apart from the usual ESXi updates. If i select 2 VM's then the response is instant. Any more than 2 and i hit the spinning circle which just seems to spin endlessly without failing or moving forward.

Anybody have any suggestions on where to start looking?

Cheers
