The good news is yes, I have deployed ESX 3.5 U4 to IBM servers, x3650 model in our case. I also encountered the same issue, stopping at the choose language section.

The servers had two four port PCI-e NIC's in addition to the two onboard ports, with the first onboard NIC initially assigned as interface eth0.

Removing the two PCI-e NIC's for the first phase of the install resolved the problem. When the install reaches the point of the 1st reboot, I shut the system down and installed the two additional NIC's.

After booting the install continues as normal with an additional reboot required (as always) to complete the reconfiguration for new hardware, then the KS section is processed and all network interfaces are configured correctly.

Note that I did test configuring EDA to use the specific network interface from eth0 through eth9, but this still did not work.

No issues with multiple network interfaces in a test environment on VMware Workstation 6.5 (host only networking, or bridged).

For othes that have reported the above problem, this is definitely worth trying.

For the Server 2003 O/S you could be creative and use vCenter's clone facility.

For sure there'll be downtime to plan for when you switch the live system to the updated clone, but fairly minimal.

For SQL, if you've got the resource you could set up a parallel database server and maybe do something clever with SQL replication?

Clustering SQL won't help as you've still only got one database so anything you do will be intrusive.

Hi Imran1,

Last year we experienced a similar type of problem on our file cluster (physical MSCS, but nevertheless some of the troubleshooting/optimisation info may be helpful):

     http://support.microsoft.com/kb/317249

Ultimately, our problem was traced to back to the Enterprise Vault block device driver causing a memory leak in the non-paged pool, however A/V was also a contributary factor - have you disabled A/V on a temporary basis to rule that out? We have OfficeScan 7.3 and a public hotfix that replaced the Trend block device driver significantly improved reliability for us.

Do you realtime scan inbound/outbound or uni-directional?

Appropriate realtime scan exceptions for guest role - what is Trend busy doing on Realtime Scan Status?

What time is the scheduled scan set for, outside of working hours?

What type of vNIC does the Server 2003 Standard Edition server have - enhanced vmxnet provides optimal performance

Client machine NIC speed/duplex settings especially in combination with 100MB Cisco switches (failure to auto-negotiate, force 100MB full duplex)

Anything in Microsoft server/client or VMkernel logs?

How many concurrent client connections is the server servicing?

As an aside, that's a lot of RAM for a file server, is it running another workload as well as file server duties?

Regards,

    Protegimus

VMware have released a comprehensive guide to managing resources which may be useful once you've investigated resource usage within your guest O/S using sysinternals Process Explorer as suggested above:

vi3_35_25_u2_resource_mgmt.pdf Resource Management Guide (16.01.2009)

Update 2 Release for ESX Server 3.5, ESX Server 3i version 3.5, VirtualCenter 2.5

URL: http://vmware.com/pdf/vi3_35/esx_3/r35u2/vi3_35_25_u2_resource_mgmt.pd

If your guest is using more CPU resource than you'd expect for its intended workload, another item to consider is whether there is an anti-virus client installed with realtime scanning - scan exceptions may be appropriate if a lot of file or network i/o is taking place.
