This might help - I haven't tested it but F5 just sent a link to a whitepaper about VMotion through the cloud using F5 hardware and VMware.

I expect that it will be expensive and I am trying to figure out how to get someone to test it for me.

I'd give my F5 rep a call and ask questions.

HTH

Mike

Edit; Storage VMotion through the cloud was part of the whitepaper.

Maybe for test systems but I wouldn't try it for production. As Rumple points out, you don't want to add that processing load to your hosts.

We're in the process of upgrading to significantly larger systems because we've found that small hosts, while they work, limit the effectiveness of HA and DRS. We'll try Fault Tolerance once multiple processors are supported.

HTH

Mike

The advice we're getting from the SAN Engineers is thin provision via the SAN and not through vSphere. Of couse, they would prefer you use Thick provisioning but when we indicated we were determined to test thin provisioning, they explained that their experience supporting customers on their hardware shows that SAN based thin provisioning is better.

We anticipate testing this after the first of the year.

The most likely explanation is that your sshd_config file contains an error that is preventing sshd from starting. Can you post your sshd_config file?

BTW, allowing root access via SSH is a very, very big security hole and I recommend you create a non-root user for SSH access. You can use sudo or su to root if you need to run commands with that level of privilege.

Defintely sounds like a problem with sshd_config.

Assuming you set root access to "No", did you add the AllowUsers username statement?

I've seen sshd refuse to restart with an error if that statement is incorrect - also check the ListenAddress line - typos on that line also have caused sshd to error and not start.

Mike

SSH works well on VI3 and VI 3.5 - we have the full version.

I've seen that error many times - normal cause is I mistyped the address in sshd_config - correcting the IP address usually works. Sometimes other mistypes in configuration file cause problem as well - such as AllowUsers, wrong port, but most often the error relates to the listen address IP.

Occassionally, I delete sshd_config and recreate it from the backup copy of the original file.

HTH

Mike

Re: Golden Master Template - managed anti-virus solution

Tom has answered with many of the reasonsfor virtualizing applications.

I work in a very large enterprise environment and one major drain on resources is patching desktops - OS and applications.

By decoupling the application from the OS, I have the ability to have master images of each - 1 image to patch instead of 30,000 desktops to patch - which includes the infamous problems of laptops that are on again/off again connections to the network.

BTW - I know I am echoing MS's presentation on why to virtualize applications but it makes sense and I expect it to be the future of computing.

Lesser concerns include legacy applications that we just "can't" get rid of for operational issues -- need some way to provide those 8 bit applications to the 32/64 bit desktops and the ability to define by policy who gets what application and how many copies are available - more control in software licensing.

HTH

Mike

According to Dell technical support the MD3000 has onboard storage controllers so you should be able to configure it to support VMware as Direct Access Storage shared by 2 hosts. Didn't go into the particulars with Dell on how to configure the MD3000 as the requirements changed for the system I was designing.

Not to dispute your advice, but I've been participating in multiple demonstrations of desktop virtualization and Microsoft in their virtualization demos is streaming Office and Microsoft is preaching separating applications from the OS.

As can be expected, the MS demos of virtual desktops running virtual applications hosted on virtual servers went well.
