The process is from vSphere Client (see picture)

..but the vmWare vSphere Client is not running! So why is this?

(This PC is the workstation we use to admin our physical Servers [via vCenter-VM] )

Thanks for any information about this.

I could not find a suitable solution for me. The only solution i had was creating a SQL-Job that cleans the database on regular bases. But this is not a real solution it is more like minimize the effect instead of really solve the cause of the problem.

I now decided to reinstall vCenter. After i read, that the vCenter Appliance has its own embedded databases for SSO and vCenter, i decided to use the appliance because i hope that the embedded DB will not have this issues... We will see...

I deployed the OVA Template and after some problems on adding to the domain all runs fine now and vCenter is stable for more than a week now. I'm happy with that! I let you guys know when i run into the same problem with the appliance.

As far as i can judge it - use vCenter Appliance!

Thanks alot for your help!

Pablo wrote:

Usually when the t-log becomes full, in the windows event log appears a message telling to check the log_reuse_wait_desc column of the sys.databases view, in order to know the reason because the t-log space can't be reused (a t-log truncation can't be done)

That's right! I have a lot of these Messages. If i look for these Information it shows (see below table). log_reuse_wait = 0 and log_reuse_desc = NOTHING

The only two things left for me is:

- re-install vCenter and hope that solves the problem = > hope... lol!!! :smileycry:

- install a non-express Version of SQL Server to see if a T-Log with let's say 20GB is enough... => i think the only thing this changes is that the T-Log is now 20GB but still gets full and still crashes my vCenter

<TABLE border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" style="width:

Pablo: "You should investigate the source of such log-in and log-out and maybe disable/deactivate it, like the creator of the discussion you mentioned did."

Me: He solved the problem by shutting down his vMA (vmware virtual management appliance) which made all these Log-In and Log-Out entries. I don't have a vMA (even tho i had one a long time ago..). _But how you pointed out correctly i have to find the part of software that causes these logIn LogOut attempts.

Pablo: "Then, talking about the transaction log, the transaction log records all transactions that occur on the database.

Using simple recover, the database logs all transactions, but after the transaction is complete, it is deleted. It uses the least amount of disk space of all the models."

Me: ...i have simple mode... Nevertheless the transaction log was 8GB even _AFTER_ successfully complete the transaction. In my understanding (and also your understanding) the T-Log should shink again after complete the transaction. (but it doesn't!!)

What's next?

- i try to find the cause of all these LogOn-entries. I'm interested in all information regarding the origination of these Log-entries. My best guess is Backup Exec 2012 (which definitely makes some of these events). I will come back with feedback...

Now the transaction is finished and the T-Log is still 8GB.

****QUESTIONS****

- is 5m Rows normal in VPX_Events?

- is login logoff - event every few second normal? And why is this happening?

- how can deletion of 1m rows lead to an increase in T-Log of 6GB (it was 2GB big before i started the deletion...) and WHY IT STAYS LIKE THIS??

Like i said before i restricted the growth of T-Log to max size of 2GB. T-Log is already filled up (in about 2h) and vCenter is still running!

DB looks like this a.t.m.:

So it seems like SQL Server and vCenter can handle this restriction without any issues... Whats next?

- will vCenter still run in 3 days?

- if T-Log problem is solved may be i run into problems with the DB itself.. last week the DB was about 4.5GB yesterday it was 5GB and today it is 5.1GB... always when i shrieked my T-Log the DB grew about 100MB -> no problem but i'm in fear that these Data cannot be auto-deleted by vCenter... WE WILL SEE...

I will come back to give some feedback and maybe some more problems...

That should solve my problem if the files really don't get bigger than this! I will now check the next few days if vCenter is sable now.. (i will notice it very fast because today vCenter was down again after 4 days of idle running...)

@raog: we didn't. What would be alternatives? (..btw. if a vmWare - tool has some issues i don't wanna know about the issues i have with 3rd party tools...)

@borja_mari: thx for your help. And yes good link (already read it) if restricted growth not working i will face up to scripts to shrink and or backup DB...

Thx alot for your help! To sum this thread up:

My Settings / Setup:

- Settings should be fine (ty for your stats MGlasson)

- i now also checked statistics but with my 2 physical hosts and my not even 20 machines it gives me 0.47GB DB size... => no problem because i can grow to 10GB (ty for your hint with statistics MGlasson)

Solutions so far:

- manually created jobs that shrinks DB / Files (ty Pablo)

What could still help further?

1) It is still unclear why the T-Log grows so fast!? (Today i cloned another machnie with absolutly zero effect on T-Log) some information to this point:

     - the DB (VIM_VCDB) seems not to be the problem after changing the retention policy and other settings... It seems that only the T-Log gets full from time to time...

     - the T-Log is now 9.9GB but my vCenter is still running! When i shrink DB now it will take like 5Min and T-Log is empty

2) are there any scripts that do that schrinking? (And why they are not built-in if this is the only workaround!?)

3) are there any other solutions on preventing T-Log from getting filled (rsp. help getting smaler again..other than shrinking)?

hehe exactly!

But the problem is not to get rid of my too big T-Log (i always just shrink files and DB and T-Log gets back to normal)

the problem is that i have to do that all few days!! (if vCenter is not running i cannot manage my vm's and my backup (BE 2012) will also not run because vCenter is not reachable) so i really need a sable vCenter Server which does not need me to clear T-Log all few days....

I just found a hint by myself. The T-Log today filled up in just 3 hours!! And i now maybe know why: one Backup ran exactly in this timeframe... so i think T-Log is so big because of "a very large DB operation" -> make a backup (i think Be2012 clones machines in the background or at least makes some snapshots and these actions are filling up my T-Log which can not be cleared until operation is finished... This reason would also fit in my first obeservation when vCenter crsahed when i wanted to make some clones manually.

If this is the case it means i need a MS-SQL License (2.5k $) to have a stable vCenter Server! WTF! Why the f** vmware does not let us use mySQL?? neighter have this issue nor need time to care about!

I mean i have an SQL Server with license but that is another server and there are our core-business application DB's which is not a good place for this. Moreover if the DB is on another Server there are two more Problems that can make vCenter stop (network, and the other server => vCenter is not idenpendant then => this also leads to problems when using vCenter to shutdown your ESXi Server when UPS switches on beacuse as soon as i shutdown my SQL Server vCenter will go down aswell...)

How you guys handle that problem? You all have SQL Server with license to have bigger DB's as 10GB? and why would vmWare suggest using SQL Express when even a simple clone fills up T-Log with 10GB of DATA??

By the way: 10GB Logs for a clone makes 0 sense... What is wrong with my setup!?

Can somebody clone a running machine and check how much bigger the log gets?

And/Or can somebody that uses SQL Express tell me if he ever had such a problem?

and anyone has some experience witch Backup Tools like Backup exec 2012 or similar and it's side effects on the T-Log?

Any help is appreciated!

Hey

I'm really new to VMware and just set up vCenter Server. Everything ran fine until vCenter was not reachable anymore.

The reason: my Transaction Log is full (it was 9.9GB of 10GB max space available for free MS SQL Express version). The solution from VMware is:

- shrink DB

- shrink Files

- set Recovery Mode to Simple

- set retention policy to min. to have DB as small as possible

i did all of it and had a few problem-free days. But then i created some clones => DB full (_not_transaction log), vcenter dead

i did all of it again.... and retried to create a clone => transaction Log full, vcenter dead

i did it again... all good when not cloning.... i gave up on cloning and found another workaround. Today i came to the office and vCenter is dead another time... Why? Transaction Log full (without doing anything!!).

what the hack am i doing wrong? The aim is to have a vCenter that runs without me cleaning the DB every few days...

Since i shrinked the DB only TransactionLog creates problems. so DB itself (with retention policy!?) seems to work but TL is still full from time to time.. So Question for me is how i can prevent the TransactionLog from getting full?

Any help is appreciated!

<hateing>

I dont have vCenter for any Logs or crap i just want to manage my ESXi servers from there!! Imagine your ESXi would crash if his log is full!! What logic is that!

So where can i choose between "a longterm running vCente without logs" or "a vCenter that will be down every few days (but you have the logs!!)"? ^^

// what could be better in my point of view //

mySQL over MS SQL => why there is no mySQL driver?? its free that's why!? capitalism!?

limit in MB over retention policy => a retention policy can safe you from growing DB but i does not have to. A limit in MB would do it always

</hateing>

hi,

Thanks alot for your explanations André! I think i almost got it...

UPGRADE ESXi:

..so i can easily upgrade my ESXi with the installation CD... good! I'm happy with that!

I read that a VM with virtual hardware 4 can run on ESXi 5... So i can switch off my VM's, upgrade my ESXi with the CD (preserving the datastore) and switch my VM's back on... -> i can seperatly upgrade my ESXi without any dependencies.. right?

UPGRADE VM's: (after upgrading my ESXi)

To upgrade a VM i need to upgrade VMwareTools and the virtual hardware.. I know how to upgrade VMwareTools but how can i upgrade the virtual hardware? with the CD!? (-> i just have vSphere Client)

UPGRADE VMFS Datastore:

Are there any compatibility issues?

Can i move a VM v.4.0 to a datatstore that was created with ESXi 5.0? (If I overwrite my old datastore and want to move a backup-ed VM v4 to the new datastore)

Is a VM v7/8 (virtual Hardware goes from v4 to v7 or v8 right?) compatible with VMFS 4? (if i'm preserving my datastore (v4) and want to upgrade the VM's virtual hardware to v7/8)

Is it recommended to upgrade the datastore? (-> datatstore: preserving or overwrite?)

UPGRADE (general):

In which order should i upgrade? (ESXi, VM, VMFS datastore...)

my new update plan:

1) switch off all VM's and create a backup

2) update ESXi and overwrite datastore

3) copy VM's to new datastore

4) update the VM's

a good plan?

LICENSING:

I'm really confused with the whole licensing stuff...

At the moment we dont need to pay for VMware licenses (because we only have 2 CPU's with 4 cores each and 32GB RAM....at least i think thats the reason). When i get this right we have just the "hypervisor".. in other words we only have ESXi (v.4).

My question:

Is the ESXi 5.0 also available for free?

When _what_ changes i need to buy licenses? If RAM exeeds 32GB? (I knwo that i get some extra stuff like "vCenter" with the "vSphere Essentials Kit" but are there any other reasons why i should license my ESXi?)

one more thing: Is the free ESXi different from the other ESXi versions? There is a rumor that the free ESXi is not compatible with the vCenter... is that right? So if i buy just the vCenter later i cannot use my existing ESXi installation? (or does this compatibility just depend on the licence key? which can be changed after the installation?)

BACKUP:

How should i backup my machines? What is best practice here? (just want to know if i should look for a script based solution or just simple snapshots...)

Any help or hint is greatly appreciated!!

best regards

If you like.....copy this to your answer and it gets easier for all of us:

UPGRADE ESXi:
UPGRADE VM's:

UPGRADE VMFS Datastore:

UPGRADE (general):
LICENSING:

BACKUP:

First of all part I: right topic?

Hy,

First of all part II: i'm new to VMware... be ready to explain basics... (i just learned by using and now need some more general information about the update process... to understand what the idea is)

I have 2 physical Servers. One with ESXi 4.0 and one with ESXi 4.1. On these ESXi systems i run a total of 10 Servers. To manage them and alle the servers on them i use two seperate vSphere-Clients.

Now i want to upgrade to ESXi 5.0 and i dont know which way i should choose...

The easiest way seemes to be the update manager for vCenter. But i dont have a vCenter. The first question is: should i buy one just save some time on upgrading my virtual "sphere"....? (Q1) Is there an update manager for vSphere-Client? (Q2)

What are the other options? (Q3) if i have no vCenter i have to do this with the commandline? (Q4)

If you would recommend to buy a vCenter i have some more questions:

- vCenter cannot run on the ESXi that should be updated.... right? (bacause it cannot update it's own ESXi host) (Q5)

- i can run vCenter from an normal Dektop-PC (not as VM)... right? (Q6)

Some more Questions about the update process:

We have always a ESXi Host with some Servers on it... So we have to update ESXi aswell as all servers that are running on it.. (moreover we need to update vCenter or vSphere-Client)

Here is how I would do it or how i understood the process: (with vCenter)

1) Install vCenter 5.1 (which is compatible with 4.x and 5.x) on an Dektop-PC & connect to my ESXi 4.0

2) Install Update Manager to my vCenter...

3) make updates ready for ESXi with UpdateManager

4) make updates ready for all VM's with UpdateManager

4) Start the Updates

Are these statements correct?

- i can update my ESXi and my VM's automaticly when i use and correctly setup the Update Manager (Q7)

- the UpdateManager can automaticly roll back when an update fails? (but what when the ESXi Update was ok but some of the VM's could not be updatet? ) (Q8)

Or....Would you recommend to seperatly update?

- copy all VM's to a new location

- convert the VM's there to 5.0

- update ESXi to 5.0 and bind the new datastore (where all 5.0 VM's are) and then test the 5.0 VM's on the new ESXi 5.0... if ok delete old 4.0 Datastore (and if desired move the 5.0VM's back to the old Datastore).. if NOK reinstall ESXi 4.0 and bind old datastore where all 4.0 VM's are...

If you like you can use the "Qx" caption behind the question to answer to a specific Question...

Thanks alot in advance for your help!!
