Best practices for root passwords across multiple ESXi

How do you manage ESXi root passwords for multiple hosts, 100+. I'm interested in understanding how to secure them, and it's been suggested different root passwords for each host. From a manageability viewpoint I don't like this. What are some good practices around this balanced with usability? Thanks.

Thanks ccsmse for the info on the VCAP pre-reqs, that's interesting.

The first response from VMware was...

Yes I needed to complete the VCP-DCV 2022 certification path as a requirement for the vSAN 2022 certification.

When mentioned I'd already completed the same exam with VCP-DCV 2021 months earlier I was then told the following:

Please be informed that in order to hold VMware Specialist – vSAN 2022 Badge, VCP-DCV 2022 is an mandatory requirement. In order to upgrade your VCP-DCV 2021 to VCP-DCV 2022,-Professional VMware vSphere 7.x (2V0-21.20) will not serve as an requirement as you have already taken it in the previous year. In order to hold active VCP-DCV 2022, I request you to complete any one of the training courses

- VMware vSphere: Install, Configure, Manage [V7]
- VMware vSphere: Install, Configure, Manage [V7] - On Demand
- VMware vSphere: Optimize and Scale [V7]
- VMware vSphere: Optimize and Scale [V7] – On Demand
- VMware vSphere: Troubleshooting [V7]
- VMware vSphere: Fast Track [V7]
- VMware vSphere: Optimize and Scale plus Troubleshooting Fast Track V7]
- VMware vSphere: Advanced Administration Workshop [V7]

Once you complete any one of the mandatory training courses, VCP-DCV 2022 will be generated and once you pass the VMware vSAN Specialist Exam-VMware vSAN Specialist Exam (5V0-22.21), VMware Specialist – vSAN 2022 Badge will be generated and will be valid for lifetime.

@scott28tt is this something you could check further as it doesn't make any sense, especially in light of the VCAP requirements allowing for VCP 2021 and 2022. The fact I've completed the same exam albeit a few months earlier in the previous calendar year so that doesn't count.

As it stands, I'll finish my vSAN training course and sit the exam, but I'm not paying or sitting another course for a 2022 badge.

Thanks for the reply. I noticed it was the default option this morning while reading a whitepaper on 5.1. I have access to 8 clusters so only a small demographic but noted the same HA config set on all, which got me curious as to why.

I think HA is one of the best features in vSphere and Admission Control the most confusing. If I'm reserving 25% of CPU and RAM in a cluster for HA I'd expect Admission Control to not allow any more VMs to be powered on once 75% (how ever that might be calculated) of resources are in use.

Your post Death to false myths: Admission Control lowers consolidation ratio and subsequent comments sum it up I guess. I apreciate you've been reposnding to HA questions for some time now so thanks for taking the time

I think it's good for morale to see the flip side of people passing this exam first time and the fact that's acheivable. Recent posts have highlighted a high failure rate and a few questions regarding the exam valididty, so this question balances out expectations. I have read many blog posts with people passing first time.

Sorry to hear that Scott, the VCAP exams are exhausting and to go through the process and not pass can be a confidence knock. My neighbour sat one of his accountancy exams 10 times before passing, he said it was frustrating but didn't deter him, and once he passed no one cared or knew how many attempts it took. I remember reading about a VCDX prepartion and saying that studying in a bubble doesn't work, reading your comments maybe some outside views on your aproach in the form of a study group may help?

All the best

When viewing a DSs virtual machines, I noticed several instances where 'LIMIT - IOPs' displays 'Not Supported' with a '0' share value. The disk resources of the vm show the value as 'Unlimited' and '1000'

I experience the same thing some times with the vSphere desktop client but it displays fine with the web client.

Some info on VM Disk Shares... Use Disk Shares to Prioritize Virtual Machines in the vSphere Client
