My apologies in advance if you don't find this post useful. I did encounter the same errors, and I was running locally installed Outlook 2010. I managed to solve the problem via Package.ini settings. Try the following. Your mileage may vary.

ChildProcessEnvironmentExceptions=outlook.exe;svchost.exe;powerpnt.exe
ChildProcessEnvironmentDefault=External
AllowExternalKernelModeServices=1
AllowExternalProcessModifications=1
AllowUnsupportedExternalChildProcesses=1
VirtualizeExternalOutOfProcessCOM=0

We eventually abandoned all hope of a useful, virtualized Acrobat X from any vendor: Citrix, VMware, or Microsoft. We haven't tried Unidesk or Spoon.

If your users want:

Right-click -> Convert to PDF in Explorer context menu, for individual files and whole directories

Right-click -> Convert to PDF in Outlook emails and folders

Save As -> Adobe PDF in Office (Ribbon macro)

Run batch OCR on entire directory structures

Combine multiple disparate file types in to a single PDF via right-click functionality

The list goes on and on

then, until ALL of the issues are worked out and a REAL recipe is delivered by one of the top four app virtualization vendors, give up your futile exercise.

I hope VMware keeps this post up until someone can show a fully-functional Acrobat X package and a COMPLETE build recipe. Partial functionality will not suffice in our environment. I lost too many weeks of productivity and sleep trying to make this work. Eventually, we had to cut our losses. Application virtualization is now our last resort, not our first. Too much loss in application functionality, too many hours spent on workarounds. This is reality.

I'm normally a nice and helpful guy, more than willing to post code, but you'll see this is my first post in months regarding ThinApp. We now use it as a point solution for those situations where all other methods have been exhausted. I believe in the idea, the theory of application virtualization. I just don't have time to deal with the reality. The VMware team is very helpful, full of great folks. I only have good things to say about them as people and professionals. But, we need:

Full application functionality from products like Acrobat X

64-bit applications

Better recipes and fewer workarounds

I appreciate that what VMware is trying to do is a difficult and challenging endeavor - that is, virtualizing applications they didn't create and to which they are not privy to the source code. If you have the luxury of going through the challenge with them, then more power to you. I lack such luxuries. If someone from VMware thinks I'm being too harsh and wants to reach out to me, please do if:

You can point to a single, step-by-step recipe for Acrobat X that will provide full application functionality. I don't want ten links pointing to three recipes, four knowledgebase articles, and three more community threads.

You seriously intend to support 64-bit applications in the near future. I realize this thread is about a 32-bit application, but our need for 64-bit support has been ongoing for years.

I dislike writing this type of post, as much as others probably dislike reading such things. I think I have a decent rapport with VMware. They know who I am and that I support the cause of application virtualization. Our situation is such that we still have 10,000 real desktops with locally installed, native applications. We are not poised to rip-and-replace all of that with virtualized applications. We are in what I call "real-world" mode. ThinApp seems best suited to an environment where just about every application is virtualized, as opposed to our environment where almost all applications are locally, natively installed. Maybe some day all apps will be delivered through a standards-compliant web browser and all our effort will be expended on the backend. Until such time, I have to make hard decisions, and for now that means virtualizing applications when no other means of deployment is sufficient.

I realize the post has been answered correctly, but I wish to elaborate.

We packaged a 16-bit application, knowing full well that it would not work on 64-bit Windows. What we did hope, though, is that it would perform better on 32-bit Windows as a virtualized app. Instead, we found that the application utilized 50% CPU all the time, whether installed natively or run as a ThinApp. We even tried it on Citrix and inside 32-bit XP Mode and XP VMware VM in VMPlayer, but still high CPU.

I did find some articles on the Internet referring to ways that you might be able to reduce the CPU wait times using registry hacks and things like that. Bottom line is that 16-bit apps are causing great damage to the bottom line. They need to go the way of the horse-drawn carriage.

One word of caution. No one yet knows if adding this entry to the top of HKLM will break something else in your application build.

I did a fresh capture of Visio Pro 2010 yesterday with ThinApp hotfix build 556613 and the HKLM delete keys. Visio KMS activation failed right away. I added one more delete line to the top of HKLM and the activation error disappeared. I added:

deleted HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\AppID\

YMMV (your mileage may vary)

I would like to encourage you that, rather than be disappointed in VMware, consider that they

Don't own the source code for Windows

Don't own the source code for Office 2010

Don't own the source code for the KMS server

Are, in many cases, not able to exactly reproduce every single customer environment

yet

They can provide multiple versions of virtual IE running side-by-side on multiple Windows version (something Microsoft doesn't offer, and they do own all the source)

ThinApp uses a runtime baked in to the compiled package - no agent to manage

ThinApp doesn't require a massive infrastructure to get started, and integrates well with existing infrastructure

If you attempt to virtualize Office 2010 with Microsoft or Citrix, you still have to make use of the APP-V Deployment Kit for Office 2010

I'm a customer, just like you. I'm not a reseller or an employee of VMware. I've investigated no fewer than six application virtualization products. I think that ThinApp is right at the top in terms of ROI and simplicity. The products that can handle kernel-mode drivers (a.k.a. Acrobat) typically require an agent and a backend infrastructure.

My encouragement to you is to be patient. I've been working on virtualizing Office 2010 components (Project and Visio) for several months. I believe we (VMware and its customers) are turning a corner with this latest hotfix and registry entries, and soon we'll see consistent success in virtualizing these products. With build 556613 and the registry entries, I'm able to run virtualized Project 2010 and virtualized Visio 2010 together and in conjunction with native Office 2010 without any KMS activation issues. I didn't have to use any agents (APP-V kit), any servers (Citrix/Terminal Services), or any Visual Basic scripting (to control OSPPSVC.) This is a big step in the direction that many VMware customers have been seeking to go and now we are.

I hope you find this message is encouraging, as that is its intent. I firmly believe this community and VMware are dedicated to solving issues and advancing the cause of application virtualization.

After several months of trying we abandoned virtualization of Acrobat X and Acrobat 9. Here's why:

Distiller functionality inconsistencies. We could combine txt, PDF, html, and XLSX in one pass, but not DOCX and PPTX

Batch conversion from right-click menu not present

Office macros missing

Batch OCR conversion/indexing of local and network drives not working on non-PDF files (according to my tester)

Need I go on?

I guess if you don't care about the most significant and frequently used features of Acrobat then it's a great candidate for application virtualization. Please note hints of bitterness and sarcasm.

If you can get Acrobat to 'be Acrobat' and not 'Acrobat Lite' with ThinApp, please let us know.

As for licensing, I use the Acrobat Customization Wizard to create my installer, I bake in our corporate serial, turn off registration and activation by users, accept the license agreement, and install to C:\AAXPRO or C:\AAXSTD, depending on if the version is Pro or Standard. We aren't doing VDI yet, so I can't comment on View issues at this time.

Good luck.

Do you have a working installation of ThinApp on any machine and/or snapshot? If so, copy the entire ThinApp folder over to a different location and launch ThinApp from that new location and it should work. ThinApp does not have to be "installed", in the traditional sense.

On rare occassions I need to package on a disconnected VM. In those cases, I copy over my working ThinApp directory to the VM, along with al the files needed for the package capture, prior to disconnecting the NIC. The only thing left to do is update the THINSTALL_BIN environment variable on the capture machine. THINSTALL_BIN should contain the full ThinApp folder path.

For upgrades, I rename the ThinApp folder to reflect its version, then install the new version, and the new version re-creates the original installation folder. This way I can run older versions if I think the new version causes an issue.

For example, if ThinApp is installed to C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware ThinApp, then the THINSTALL_BIN environment variable is "C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware ThinApp" (with the quotes.) I rename the VMware ThinApp folder to VMware ThinApp 4.6.1, then run the installer for 4.6.2 and it installs to C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware ThinApp. I now have both versions.

We run ThinApp from a share on a server via UNC path. As I mentioned above, sometimes I need to capture on a disconnected machine. In those cases, I'll copy over a working ThinApp installation to the capture machine's desktop, and add the THINSTALL_BIN environment variable to the capture machine. Because I'm always renaming the install folders on the server, I can try any ThinApp build on the capture machines.

As for ThinApp licensing ramifications for the approach I've outlined above, I'll leave that subject for VMware and/or your reseller.

Now that the hotfix and registry entries seemed to have cured the KMS activation woes for Office 2010 applications under ThinApp, I now have the opportunity to move in to further testing.

I want my Project 2010 users to have the ability to select resources (people) from Active Directory (AD) The default list separator in the Windows operating system is the comma. Our organization (like many, I'm sure) creates new AD accounts with a Name (RDN) value of "Last Name, First Name". This is not to be confused with the login ID, which for us is something completely different. This display name value has more to do with easily finding a user object in AD by sorting on last name.

Project 2010 does not like the default separator value (comma) as part of the AD user name lookup. Here are the steps to add a resource from AD in to Project 2010:

Open Project 2010 (ThinApp'ed, of course!)

A new project is probably started by default. Click the Resource tab. Under the Team Planner entry on the far left is a drop-down list. Choose Resource Sheet.

Under the Add Resources button is a drop-down list. Select "Active Directory..."

Find a resource (person) you wish to add and click OK.

If your user object name is retrieved in the following format "Last Name, First Name (FirstName.LastName@company.com)", and if the default separator value under Regional Settings is the comma, you will see the following error message:

We are unlikely to change how we enter Name (RDN) values any time soon, with over 12,000 of them now in the system. I also don't want to have to change to default separator value for all of our Project 2010 users.

My question to the community:

What do you think is the best approach at solving this issue? I have considered isolating the registry entry for this value and setting it to full isolation mode in the package. I have yet to try or test this approach. I thought the community might have some ideas.

I changed the native separator to something other than a comma, but the virtual bubble does not seem to recognize the change.
