I am looking for documentation that describes how the ESX Storage Management decides when and how much space to expand a thin provision disk. What are the rules? Can they be configured?

Are there high and low water marks? Is a fixed extent used or does the server use predictive algorithms.

Say disk is thin provisioned for max of 150GB and is currently using 5GB.

Disk I/O starts up and a 1 Gb of new data is created on the disk.

Is ESX Server going expand 1GB or will the ESX Server allocation say 1GB plus a percentage for safety.

Is Swap space handling differently than a normal file system in the way the VMDK is expanded?
