Hi,

I'm working with ESXi-7.0 U3d Build 19482537 in a stretched cluster for two sites.
In one site I have the driver ixgben 1.8.9.0-1OEM and 1.7.1.35 in the second site.
The Image is a custom image for DELL.

I would like to know if the driver has been added by DELL or is a standard from VMware.

Centreon monitoring issue after restarting hostd and vpxa services

Hi,

To troubleshoot another problem. I had to restart the hostd and vpxa services like this : /etc/init.d/<service> restart.

But by restarting those Management services, Our Centreon (Nagios) isn't able anymore to query all the VM's on Network and Memory information. It respond : "CHECK_VMWARE_API.PL CRITICAL - HOST-VM MEM Unknown error" or "CHECK_VMWARE_API.PL CRITICAL - HOST-VM NET Unknown error". Yet the monitoring of the CPU work as intended for example.

Have you any idea to deal with ?

Our Environement : 2 ESX 6.0.0 in cluster mode (Operation done on the slave one), Centreon 2.7.13, check_vmware_api.pl script to monitor.

Trying to remove vmware tools

I've been trying to remove VMware-Tools-windows-11.0.0-14549434. from a windows 10 machine without any luck. The deinstall starts finishes as everything went ok however the program isn't removed . Seems like it silently fails. Tried powershell scripts to remove it nothing wants to remove this version.

When deploying a VM from a template, it does not change Hard Disk UUID

Hi all. There is a problem.
I made a virtual machine template.
If I expand the VM from the template without "Customize this virtual machine's hardware", then UUID Hard Disk changes to a new one, if I use "Customize this virtual machine's hardware", I add CPU/RAM , then UUID of the Hard Disk does not change.

In my vmware vsphere 6.5 i have installed 3 virtual machine with ubuntu 18.04 and 20.04 for DNS, LOG and MRTG.

My DNS machine is working fine with 18.04 but the LOG (18.04 Ubunutu OS) and MRTG (20.04 UBUNTU os) freeze continiously like 6-10 hours. When they work they run fanstasticly, but when it freeze then i have to manually reboot every time. Any solutions..?

SEG .awsec Files and Keys

I did a training for a contractor for the USA Dept of Energy this week and these detailed questions came up that I couldn't quite answer on the spot. I opened ticket # 775555 that is summarized below and may be helpful to you as well. Enjoy if so.

Do we have any documentation around the process flow for how .awsec files are

created by the SEG? Further, where any related encryption key is generated,

stored and passed on to the device?

Then any guidance/details around how this could be compromised and any safeguards around how any cert could be used maliciously to open an .awsec file outside of normal use cases.

The process flow is described below:

Device enrolls with AirWatch

Create an encryption key unique to user/device combination

Encryption key is stored in the cache of the SEG

Device syncs for email or downloads attachments

SEG proxies request through to EAS server if request is allowed

EAS server responds with content

SEG encrypts attachment, applies new file header and appends new .awsec file type

AWSEC file type unique to SCL and can only be read by SCL

Header is uniquely generated for each attachment, so each attachment is encrypted uniquely

Encrypted attachment is received by the device and SCL checks its keystore for an encryption key whose hash matches the hash in the file header

If verification passes, the file is decrypted and can be viewed in the SCL

If verification fails, the SCL calls an endpoint to retrieve the encryption key and once SCL receives it, SCL decrypts the file

The device creates an encryption key when it’s enrolled.

The Encryption key is stored in the SEG cache.

The attachments sent to the SEG have the mime type changed to awsec along with the file name appending the .awsec.

When you say the header is uniquely generated, is this the mime type?

How does the AWDS send files to the devices? Are these sent encrypted at the transport layer and not at the file layer?

Yes and yes. The header has the mime type in it and the files are sent at the transport layer.

Silently App Push, Force Newest App Version, Renew APNs Cert, Detect and Schedule iOS Updates (iOS 9+) & Getting Ready for iOS 10

Users with iOS devices are required to enter their Apple ID passwords when installing applications. How do you silently push public applications to iOS devices?

The following steps are required to silently push an application:

The application must be an internal, public or a VPP app that is managed by AirWatch.
The device needs to be supervised by Apple Configurator or via DEP.
User Based VPP - there must be a registered Apple ID on each device.
Device Based VPP - business can use VPP and MDM to distribute and assign apps directly to a device and no Apple ID is required.
You cannot have restrictions on public application access. This includes the Restricted Mode for iOSapplications that hides the App Store.
If you have a restrictions profile, have Allow installing apps enabled, Force iTunes password entry disabled, and Allow All Apps in the ratings section.

Can you require that public apps are updated as new versions are released?

AirWatch can only force app updates for public apps by fully reinstalling the latest version on each device's native app store. To force an app update in this way, perform the following steps:

Remove the assignment from the app in the AirWatch Console and save. Then, re-add the proper assignment and save again.
The version of the app already installed on managed devices will be removed, and then the latest version will be prompted to reinstall.

If the App Catalog is available to users, they can update the app at any time by choosing to re-download from the App Catalog.

If the device's native app store is active on managed devices, each device will be prompted to update to the latest version of public apps as they are made available. Automatic updates can be enabled on iOS devices by navigating to and enabling Settings > iTunes & App Store > Updates.

How can you renew the APNs for MDM certificate in the AIrWatch Console?

The APNs Certificate for MDM allows for iOS devices to communicate with the Air-Watch Console. iOS devices cannot be managed without a valid APNs Certificate.

After a life-cycle of one-year, the APNs for MDM will have to be renewed. The below resolution details this process. This process has two requirements:

AirWatch recommends using the Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox browsers. Internet Explorer can download the required files into the wrong format (JSON in this case).
Once the 'Renew' button has been clicked in the APNs for MDM window, do not navigate away from the renewal window or close it. Each .plist file is unique when 'Renew' is clicked and this sometimes generates a mismatch error when uploading the .pem file from Apple's end.

Steps to renew the APNs certificate:

Open the Air-Watch Console and navigate to Config & Settings > All Settings > Devices & Users > Apple > APNs for MDM.

Look at the value for 'Issued To'. After the portion labeled External, there will be a unique value. Take note of the first four characters.
In a different browser tab, navigate to https://identity.apple.com, and log in with the same Apple ID credentials used to create the APNs Certificate.
In the AirWatch Console, click 'Renew'. You will be navigated to a window with a .plist file to download. Download the file and return to the Apple Portal tab.
Find the correct Certificate to renew. You can do this by clicking on the 'i' next to each Certificate and matching the portion following 'External' with the four characters noted in Step 2. Once found, click 'Renew'.
You will be directed to a page where you will be able to upload the .plist file previously downloaded. Upload and click 'Next'.
The Apple Portal will then provide a .pem file. Download this file and navigate to the Air-Watch tab.
Within the Air-Watch tab, click 'Next' and upload .pem file where specified. Also enter the Apple ID used to renew the Certificate within the Apple Portal.
Click 'Save'. You will be directed back to the main page of the APNs for MDM section.
Confirm the Certificate has been renewed on the Air-Watch tab with no error and click 'Save' once more.

Configure detection of OS updates on devices using iOS 9+.

Administrators can query for available updates on iOS 9 devices and force updates on iOS 9+ DEP Supervised devices.

To query for OS updates (iOS 9 devices):

Navigate to Devices > List View > Select Device > More > Query > OS Update
On the Details View page, select the Summary tab and find the Device Info box to determine if an update is available for the selected device. Available OS Updates appears in the box if an update is available. If not, None indicates that there are no updates.

To schedule an OS Update (iOS 9 + DEP devices):

Navigate to Devices > List View > Select Device > More > Schedule OS Update. A message box appears.
Select OK to send the command to push the OS update on the device.
View the OS Update Status on the Details View page. Select Refresh as needed to update the OS Update Status and Download Percentage of the update. When the update is complete, None will appear in the Device Info box.

Getting Ready for iOS 10

Alert: Action required for customers using AirWatch applications, SDK or App Wrapping

If you are managing iOS devices through AirWatch and leverage AirWatch applications, SDK, or App Wrapping, it is critical that you make updates to prepare for iOS 10. If you do not make updates you risk devices being incorrectly flagged as compromised and unintentionally wiped or unenrolled when they upgrade to iOS 10. If a device updates to iOS 10 before updating all affected applications and is marked as compromised, then that device must update all affected applications and send a beacon back to the console in order to revert the status back to uncompromised. A beacon can be manually sent to the console by opening any application that contains the AirWatch SDK.

If you are unable to make these updates in advance of iOS 10 we recommend that you temporarily disable Compromised Protection or any compliance policies related to Compromised Detection. To learn more about disabling Compromise Protection click here.

It is important to note that AirWatch Teacher Tools will not support iOS 10. If you use Teacher Tools and have devices that will be upgrading to iOS 10, you should disable Compromise Protection or any compliance policies related to Compromise Detection.

AirWatch Console support for iOS 10

Features new to iOS 10 will be available as part of AirWatch 8.4.5. A database seed script will be made available on myAirWatch for on-premise customers running AirWatch 8.4.5 to activate the new iOS 10 functionality upon its release. These features will automatically be activated for SaaS environments.Addtionally, a database seed script will be made available for earlier AirWatch Console versions to allow for basic MDM support of iOS 10 devices.

iOS 10 Beta

Apple has made a public beta of iOS 10 available for download. As a reminder, AirWatch cannot guarantee support for beta versions of software. End users who upgrade their devices to iOS 10 Beta may run into issues if they are enrolled in AirWatch and/or using AirWatch productivity apps. For this reason, we recommend users who wish to participate in the beta program not upgrade their primary work device. In the event that we identify a critical compatibility issue between one of our applications and iOS 10 Beta, we will post a Known Issue on myAirWatch. If your team identifies a potential issue and you do not see a Known Issue posted, we encourage you to submit a Support Request through the myAirWatch Support portal. Our Technical Support Engineers will not be able to engage with you to resolve the issue, but we will pass along the information to our product teams for further investigation and testing.

Known Issues related to iOS 10

Updated iOS version support following the release of iOS 10

Following the release of iOS 10, AirWatch will guarantee support for the following iOS versions for new AirWatch product releases:

AirWatch MDM platform support	iOS 7+

Devices that do not meet these requirements and have not yet enrolled or installed the specific app will not be able to do so following these releases. Devices that are currently enrolled and that currently have the specified apps installed will continue to function, but AirWatch cannot guarantee full support of all functionality for these devices in future versions.

Minimum supported version information is available in the Product Announcement for each release application version.

Reminder: Instructor Responsibilities (Preparation/Follow-up Messages, WebEx Creation & Exams)

Based on past training, a student was never sent a preparation email for a LOL session, which meant they didn’t know what to bring to the class. They didn’t bring a device and couldn’t see the end results of the labs. This lead to complaint, which triggered a free credit for him to attend the course again for free.

To address, the flow was reviewed and was made as simple as possible, so instructors know who does what, if a course overlaps with another instructor. We are also looking at other ways to ensure students know the pre-reqs for our courses, such as educating sales teams, and adding this info to the classes in VMware EDU portal/myLearn as a download link.

Process Flow

Whoever is starting the training, sends out the preparation message and creates the WebEx. For a Bootcamp, the instructor would build the WebEx for both CM and CDIS and also make the CDIS teacher an instructor; alternate host. The CDIS instructor should be bcc’d on the preparation message for the Bootcamp for visibility.
Whoever is starting the training, enters the Host ID and Password in myLearn. If an alternate instructor is teaching CDIS of a Bootcamp, they would enter the Host ID and Password for their session, since the starting instructor cannot access this session in myLearn. This info should be pulled from email when the WebEx invite is created and the alternate instructor is added a presenter; alternate host.
Whoever finishes the training, is responsible to get the exams enabled and sends out the follow-up message from myLearn.
All flows have been added to the Instructor’s HandbookTraining Delivery Checklist; attached and loaded to the community.

Example Flow Situation

Instructor A: Assigned to CM and Bootcamp (CM part)

Instructor B : Assigned to CDIS and Bootcamp (CDIS part)

3 business days before delivery

Instructor A: Creates WebEx for Bootcamp; the same one will be used for CM, CDIS and Bootcamp*. Sends students preparation message (via Outlook email template) for CM and Bootcamp using single WebEx info; ensures dates are correct for each email. Instructor B is bcc’d with other students. Updates CM and Bootcamp in myLearn with Host ID and Password.
Instructor B: Updates CDIS in myLearn with Host ID and Password, which is pulled from bcc’d email. Sends students preparation message (via Outlook email template) for CDIS; ensures dates are correct.

*If a CM student rejoins the WebEx for CDIS, Instructor B would confirm payment in myLearn and allow or drop the student based on status. Instructor B has to send the roster to VMware EDU ops for CDIS, so attendance has to be verified anyway. Also, It’s easier to create one WebEx than trying to create multiple, plus the Bootcamp host ID and Password only allows for one entry. If the instructor opted to change it at the end of Day 2, this step could be forgotten. Lastly, this model supports a consolidated (updated) preparation email.

Day training finishes

Instructor A: Enables exams in SF for CM; If non-AW instructor, sends roster to training@air-watch.com. Once exams are enabled, sends students follow-up message (via myLearn template) for CM.
Instructor B: Enables exams in SF for CDIS and Bootcamp; if non-AW instructor, sends roster to training@air-watch.com. Once exams are enabled, sends students follow-up message (via myLearn template) for CDIS and Bootcamp.

Update: Planned VMware EDU WebEx Change - 8/26 PST

On the evening of 8/26, Pacific Time, the VMware EDU WebEx provider is being switched. Overall, this should not be a major change, but there are some points you need to keep in mind:

Any session provisioned prior to the evening of 8/26 will disappear and must be recreated AFTER the change. If you have a class assigned for the week of 8/29 or later you will have to create that session after the switchover.
The dial-in numbers we will use will all change. These numbers will be shown when the users connect to any session after the switchover.
The new WebEx site will be using the newest version of the WebEx platform, therefore you will see the “Updating WebEx” message the first time you log in to the new site.
Everything else will remain same as before- URL (vmwareeducation.webex.com), username and password.

Process Change

Starting today, all program, content, delivery, sales updates that would normally be send out from me, will now be sent out at the start of the month after the Monthly Training Program Update meeting. Any updates will still be added to the blog and the issue doc that is sent out on the Wednesday before delivery for assigned instructors.

Instead of a TTT review sessions, this will be changed to a Monthly Training Program Update meeting which will be conducted once a month at 7:30AM EST for all geos to attend. A video recording will be sent out with the deck and a change list of all the updates.

The scope of the Monthly Training Program Update meeting will be the same as the TTT review sessions, however if there isn’t enough time to cover a new TTT flow, an additional meeting may be setup.
