SSL certificate vCenter 6.7 Without FQDN

my vCenter doesn't have an FQDN, so when deploying I don't include any FQDN. once it finished deploying, the hostname by default will be "phaton-machine". Is it possible to add an SSL Certificate without using an FQDN?

Previously my vcenter was functioning normally, then an error appeared.

I then checked my ssl certificate and the result is "Not Such File or Directory) (image 1). Then I tried regenerating the VMCA SSL certificate. certificate added successfully, but still unable to login to vCenter. error 503 Endpoint appears in login (image 2)

Format of OVA manifest file depending on OVF or VMX version?

Hey guys,

we try to generate an OVA appliance for VMware player/Fusion as well as ESXi/vSphere. We build the OVA manually, using an OVF based on an ovftool or ESXi export, a VMDK and a manifest (.mf) file with SHA1 hashes for the other two files, then adding those three into into a gzipped tarball with OVA ending.

Our first attempt was with an OVF generated via ovftool from a VMX that we successfully used on VMware player before. This OVA could be imported into VMware player successfully, but it failed to be imported to ESXi, directly or via vSphere, throwing an error about a mismatch between manifest file and content. The manifest file looked like this:

SHA1 (<name>.ovf) = <sha1>
SHA1 (<name>.vmdk) = <sha1>

We compared it with an export from ESXi and found the spaces around the filename parenthesis to be missing. Removing them from the one above, generated by ovftool, allowed the appliance to be imported in ESXi.

We then generated a new OVF with some tuned hardware settings based on an ESXi export, where the spaces were missing expectedly. It imports fine on ESXi and vSphere, but fails with the manifest mismatch error on VMware player. Interestingly, adding the spaces does not solve it. We tried to compare with another ovftool VMX conversion with newer VMX version, which then as well didn't contain those spaces anymore, but SHA256 hashes instead. Trying to use SHA256 hashes within the other appliance (of course with correct hashes for the two files, double checked), with or without spaces still failed.

This all makes me think that the exact format as well as the used hashing algorithm highly depends not only on the VMware product, but also on the used OVF and VMX version strings defined in the OVF file: The latter is defined within the OVF as well, e.g. via <vssd:VirtualSystemType>vmx-13</vssd:VirtualSystemType> which indicates hardware version 13.

Is there an overview of the exact expected/functional manifest file format and supported hashing algorithm for each project, depending on OVF version, VMX version?

vSphere Management Appliance (vMA) and Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)

Hello everybody,

I have a problem regarding the choice of an UPS managing our ESXi servers.

All of them that I have seen, use the vMA to send network shutdown commands to the ESXi server and gracefully shutdown all virtual machines and then the ESXi itself.

For security reasons I cannot use the VMware vMA installed on the ESXi, and as well I cannot use SSH to send shutdown commands via scripts to the ESXi, also with a direct USB connection instead of a network connection.

It is a big problem, but has somebody experienced that problem and found a good UPS that doesn't use vMA or a working solution ?

Hey everyone,

is it safe to just delete vCSA from vSphere?

My vSphere Client works but the The vSphere web client doesn't work, the vCSA can't start inventory service, etc. So I would like to start from scratch. If I delete the vCSA straight from vSphere, there's no fear that this would cause issues with VMs, right? I just need to know that all the VMs will keep running with no interruptions.

What is VMWARE trying to do here ? I download a fresh VDP OVA and can not install because of an EMC certificate error . HOW DO I GET AROUND THIS ?

I've been playing with /usr/lib/vmware-vmca/bin/certificate-manager and was not able to fix this issue when trying to login into my vcenter.

Let me describe it a little bit further:

I have an SSO Appliance and a Virtual Center Server (Running on Nutanix although not relevant).

And we are decommissioning a Windows domain, so I changed the DNS settings and machines suffixes and configured authentication towards the new domain.

Authentication using the new domain was working fine but when checking the SSL certificate via browser I could see it was using the previous FQDN so I played with the certificate-manager and ended up screwing things as you can see.

I've tried option 2,4,8 (and of course I didn't take a snapshot) although if needed I can probably restore from Nutanix, this is the DR site so I don't have VMs here (besides those two appliances).

Version is 6.0.0.30200

SSO old name = srv-adl-usr-vsso.OldWinDomain.local

SSO new name = srv-adl-usr-vsso.NewWinDomain.local

VCenter old name =srv-adl-usr-vcs.OldWinDomain.local

VCenter new name =srv-adl-usr-vcs.NewWinDomain.local

On /var/log/vmware/vsphere-client/logs/vsphere_client_virgo.log I can see those error messages

Browser Appliance, RDP connection

I dowloaded and installed Browser-Appliance.45.2 (OS Centos 7.1) on my ESXi envirnoment.

I'd like to access that machine in a RDP connection from my Windows 10 PC.

Can someone tell me how can I do it without security risks?

I'm not a Linux expert ...

NSX Manager Won't Automatically Configure Itself When Deployed Using the OVFTool

This puzzles me..

I have previously been able to deploy my NSX Manager Appliance without any problems..

The command below successfully deploys the NSX Manager appliance. However, the appliance is not able to set the passwords and IP.

When the appliance boots for the first time I have to log in with the default username and password.

Next, I have to run the "setup" command to set the IP address.

What could be wrong? Is there something missing in the deployment command?

I can successfully resolve the hostname of the appliance from the ESXi hosts, PSC and VCS. I am also able to ping between all of them.

The exception is the NSX appliance. I am only able to get a successful ping reply after I run the setup command, and reboot the appliance.

hi all

we have here a UDA Appliance, what we normal take for PXE Booting Linux Systems and also the HP SPP Packs. Now we want try it also for install ESXi6. But i get now the error: failed to load COM32 file esx6.ESXi6.mboot.c32! have someone a idea what that can be? I have installed also the latest patch 2.0.26 but no chance to get working it!

wir haben hier eine UDA Appliance die bislang sehr gut funktioniert. wir deployen oracle linux, knoppix, und HP SPP Packs darüber, nun wollen wir auch ESXi6 darüber installieren, aber das Teil kommt nach der Auswahl an diesem Fehler nicht vorbei:

jemand eine idee wie ich die appliance dazu bewegen kann, das ESXi richtig zu booten?

Trotz Aktivierung der Sound Card und Installierung de Flashplayers erfolgt keine Ton-Wiedergabe.

Im Centos7 OS ist kein Lautsprecher Syboml zu finden beziehungsweise zu aktivieren.

Best way to create an appliance

I need to create an appliance. I can:

1. Export an existing Vm as an appliance from vsphere client

2. Use a program like VMware studio to create it for me

What is the best way to create it? The goal is to make it as easy to administer within vCenter as possible - get all the info on it in the vCenter Web Client that I can, make tools an hardware easy to update/upgrade, etc. Thanks!

Workbench 3.5 Certification test setup fails with STAF error

I'm trying to run a certification test on a Workbench 3.5.0.0 and the setup for each test is failing with this error:

Trouble creating test instance, Failed to get variable STAF/Config/OS/Name, RC:16

I verified STAF is running and that the firewall is turned off.

I deployed workbench from the OVF on to Workstation 11.

What else could be wrong?
