That’s up to you after you after you read the release notes and KB article https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/93071

My personal opinion:

The performance impacts of the new encryption will probably be most evident in fully encrypted VMs where the VMDK files are encrypted. Partial encryption may not exhibit the performance gains

I believe the new encryption to be more secure than the old. I tend to lean toward more security, so I’m in favor of doing the upgrade But if you ever anticipate needing to take the VM back to Fusion 13, do not upgrade.

If you do decide to upgrade, make a copy of the VM to another hard drive before powering it on. There have been some reports of the upgrade not working, and you want to be able to recover from that.

Also make sure you have extra disk space to hold a full copy of the VM to perform the upgrade as noted in the KB article

Hans, here's my advice:

Move to the Fusion 13.5 update and stop using Tech Preview releases. Fusion 13.5 is the officially released version of what was previewed in the 2023 Tech Preview. Anything you did in that preview should move smoothly to the 13.5 release.

Tech Previews are never officially meant to be running day-to-day activities (although to be honest, VMware's lagging in delivering features for Windows 11 ARM made it almost a necessity to use it). They are for testing new features and review by the community before release. They become obsolete the minute the official release appears, and VMware should be doing everyone a favor and removing the downloads for these beta releases when that occurs.

The features are released, so the need for running the Tech Preview is over.

You may be waiting an awful long time for VMware to release another Tech Preview if they decide to do one before the next major Fusion release. Also if bugs and security issues crop up with the Tech Preview, you will get no help on them from VMware unless you can reproduce them on Fusion 13.5.

I certainly hope you are not using the older 21H1 or 22H2 Tech Preview releases as those have been obsolete for well over a year now and contain known bugs and security vulnerabilities.

Instead of downloading through the product, try downloading the Fusion installer directly from VMware's software download at https://customerconnect.vmware.com/downloads/info/slug/desktop_end_user_computing/vmware_fusion/13_0

It will offer 13.5 by default, but other releases can be downloaded by using the dropdowns.

If you're riunning a Tech Preview release, drag the VMware Fusion Tech Preview.app file to the trash before running the released version installer. Installing the released version when a Tech Preview is installed won't update the Tech Preview.app, it will install VMware Fusion.app beside it in the Applications folder. That's a situation ripe for confusion.

Ubuntu Server 22.04.3 LTS, 23.04 and 23.10 all work with Fusion on Apple Silicon. You just have to make sure you have the arm64 ISO.

You might want to take a look at the unofficial Fusion Companion Guide https://communities.vmware.com/t5/VMware-Fusion-Documents/The-Unofficial-Fusion-13-for-Apple-Silicon-Companion-Guide/ta-p/2939907 It has lots of information on Ubuntu (including a list of direct download links for Ubuntu versions that run on Apple Silicon).

Canonical doesn’t release a version of Ubuntu Desktop for ARM architectures that will run on Apple Silicon, but it’s pretty easy to “convert” a server install into a Desktop equivalent.

File this under “when all else fails, believe the diagnostic messages”.

If you are running on a M1 or M2 Mac, you have the wrong architecture ISO. You have an amd64 ISO that is for Intel or AMD systems. You need the Ubuntu Server arm64 ISO. It is unfortunate that the two distinctly different architecture types are so closely named.

Using the amd64 ISO on Apple Silicon when creating a new VM will result in a VM with an OS type that is for Intel CPUs. (That’s because it recognized the installation media as an Intel ISO). Subsequently trying to boot that VM on Apple Silicon CPUs will throw the incompatible architecture message before the VM ever attempts to boot.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

I can see the "Contents" folder by right clicking the app, the zip of the folder is 1.4G that cannot be uploaded. I don't see any .log files

The downloaded file:

VMware-Fusion-13.0.2-21581413_universal.dmg
ubuntu-22.04.3-live-server-amd64.iso

Let me know what else you need

You shouldn't be seeing that.

Please tell us:

The exact name of the Fusion installation ISO that you used

The exact name of the Ubuntu Server ISO you used

And, please post the vmware.log and mksSandbox.log files that are found in the virtual machine's bundle foder. You can find them by finding the virtual Machine in the Finder and right clicking on it, and selecting "Show Package Contents". A Finder window should open and display the files that make up your VM. Zip up those files and attach them to a reply to this message.
