Hi , i have a problem , maybe is my fault but:

i am trying to undeploy a vapp and get some weird behavior,

I dont think we have VAMI option in vCloud director appliance.

I can see VMware article provides "Create-DB-Backup" script for taking backup of embedded postgres of VCD. But no articles available for VCD with SQL.

1. How long is going to take the metrics to show in the GUI?

2. Is there a command to verify VCD and Cassandra are getting along? I checked the cell-management-tool cassandra but I did'nt finnd anyhting related

2. We're only seeing the main VCD cell (we deployed 3 cells per best practices) talking to the Cassandra Cluster, is that normal?

vCAV 3.0 & vCD 9.7 Initial Setup Cert issue

I have most of the environment on self gen certs except for the VCD cells which are on a proper SSL public wildcard cert.

When I run the Initial Setup from vCloud Availability on step 3. vCloud Director, when I enter the URL and VCD administrator@system with the password I use to log in, it gives an error:

Could not find SSL/X509 certificate from "https://my-vcd-url/api" (I changed the URL name for this post)

I thought perhaps the vCAV needed the cert imported, so I then imported the cert under https://url:8441 backend.

Note, I don't have the vCAV setup setup on DNS for the public name, merely internal DNS.

So I am not sure if I needed to import the wildcard cert and if I did, it stands to reason that like with the VCD setup , I need to change to the respective domain name for each vCAV appliance.

Anyone seen this issue?

vCD 10 and vRO 8.0

I know they aren't listed in the Product Interoperability Matrices but am wondering if anyone is using the combination without any issues?

Next on my list is deploying vRO and integrating it into vCD and if I can just hop to the latest and greatest rather than wait that would be ideal so I don't have to bother upgrading it later.

We have vSphere 6.7 u3

I opened this post because looks like i dont understand how should looks like update process for operating systems. Issue starting after some operations in catalog during OS update.

We have opened SR: 19080739611

The problem looks that.

We have now affected all Windows Server template. After some long troubleshooting what we have.

When client download VM to OVA by tenant portal and next try import to vCD process is hanging on 1%

on NFS we have VMDK capacity is 0:

After some time we have timeout... and task fails with specific description....

7 zip is not working to extract OVA (worked before we performed planned OS updates)

Working only WinRar. And after extracting OVA to 3 files and importing them by tenant or flex client is possible to import VM again.

Problem is not observed when we have a fresh template (created inside vCD). When we create some new VMs we can download and import OVA with success.(by tenant client)

The problem started after some time. Last time we observed this issue after Windows Server 2019 update. Maybe this is not related to the specific OS but some activity on vCD level.

The process which we performed during update ( i received this from our OS engineer)

## Update process:

1. Deployment vAPP from Catalog (in Public ORG for templates):.

2. Start VM with network ==> UPDATE OS ==> Stop VM

3. Add to Catalog (with overwrite option and with Customize Vm settings)

4. Deployment vAPP from Catalog (in Public ORG for templates):.

5. Remove network (ORG VDC Network) from vAPP and VM

6. Add to Catalog (with overwrite option and with Customize Vm settings)

Im not sure why we are twice time adding to Catalog... but this is normal operation in my opinion.

From GSS support we not received the good solution. Because "they don't know what we did exactly during this update process".... and suggest importing new VMs from vCenter...( maybe every month ? )

Problem not exist in Flex client... which will be not available in next vCD version...

What is strange OVA from tenant and flex client is different inside.... (exactly that same VM)

For importing those OVA to vSphere we have problems too... but for this, we have different workaround VMware Knowledge Base

For now,for vCD we have only workaround related to WinRar.

How looks like you update OS process ? in your environments?

vCD 9.7 Installation Issues

I'm reaching out to the community because I'm at my wits end at deploying the vCD 9.7 OVA using all the methods available. Some info:

I have deployed a NFS server and can confirm the permissions, etc are all correct (more on this later)
I have deployed a RabbitMQ server
Am using VMware_vCloud_Director-9.7.0.4343-14046945_OVF10.ova
Am testing all this in a nested VMware ESXi installation on VMware Workstation
Am attempting to deploy the first primary small appliance with embedded DB
I have forward and reverse DNS resolution entries for the vCD cell

So I've tried the following:

Deploying the OVA to my vESXi host simply by following the bouncing ball and supplying all required information when deploying a VM from OVF/OVA file. All seems fine and I can login to the VAMI on port 5480 however I get the dreaded "no nodes found in the cluster" error in the vCD Database Availability tab.

When I login to the console, and view the setupvcd.log file I get the following:

And the contents of the update-appliance-type.log file

Both log files imply that I have not selected a valid cell type yet I am 100% certain that I chose "primary small" during the OVA deployment.

I can confirm that the vCD cell can reach the NFS transfer server, has mounted the NFS share and that it has successfully written to the directory.

I can also confirm that the user and group ownership are correct.

Getting sick and tired of typing the same thing over and over again during the UI OVA wizard, I tried deploying the OVA to my vESXi host using the ovftool using the same parameters. Now, after powering on I get the following start job which never succeeds and I am left with a non-functioning vCD instance.

This times out and eventually I get to the VAMI screen saying the networking is not configured. Basically the vCD appliance is useless at this point. I cannot even login using the credentials I used during the OVA deployment. Nothing much can be done besides deleting the appliance and starting again.

Here's a copy of the ovftool syntax I'm using. It reflects the same properties I'm using during the UI deployment.

Using the HTML5 UI to test I get this error:

In the Flex UI to test I get a successful connection but when I browse to the vROPS Tenant App in vCloud Director I get this error:

Cassandra DB size and grow to store VM metrics

Avaibility of CloudInit compatible METDATA Service in vCloud Director

Hi Everybody,

this is not a technical question, instead i'd like to know you opinion about the requirement if a "CloudInit" compatible METADATA Service in vCloud Director.

For all who don't know what i am talking about:

All large public cloud provider (AWS, Azure) and Openstack providing a METADATA service which can access (mainly) via IP. All implementation i know uses "169.254.169.254" to enable access to the VM/instance specific METADATA.

Inside all linux "cloud ready" images you will find "CloudInit" which querys this metadata service to configure itself during boot (Hostname, IP, SSH keys, UserScripts etc). It is also possible to query information about the instance itself (which region, VM flavor, network, image name etc).

Whithin vCloud Director there is no such service avaiable. You can access the Metadata of a VM via vCloud API, but this requires access from the VM to the vCloud API and it also requires authentication to the vCloud API. The second way is to use OVF properties of VMs. But these properites must be set manual for each VM/properites and requires the VM to be powered off. Also there is no CloudInit provider for both ways.

I already spoke to many VMware representives (VMworld 2019 EU) regarding the topic but nobody is aware of this.

So my question is:

Is there really nobody who likes to have this features?

Provider Portal on the WAN

I was wondering if it should be accessible over the internet, the tenant portal and console proxy both work fine over the internet.

I'm using an NGINX reverse proxy in the DMZ with the WAF rules disabled for vCD, I'm assuming it must need to be able to access something that's configure like vCenter or NSX and can't so it doesn't work or it's a reverse proxy issue?

Just looking for clarification on if the provider console should work or not over the WAN, thanks.

vCD for a SaaS Co Questions

I have some questions I hope can be answered,

A little background on what I provide:

I've got a single vCenter deployment managing both Management, Edge, and Compute Clusters.

In Compute Cluster 1 are Tenant VMs, each Tenant environment is in it's own Resource Pool with it's own VXLAN/Subnet.

In Compute Cluster 2 are shared VMs, these are Horizon RDSH VMs with and without graphics cards for vGPU use. The same VMs are accessed by multiple tenants to access their applications.

The Tenant VMs are Database and Line-of-Business applications.

I want to use vCD to provide a view into the Tenant VMs, resources, statiscs, performance etc etc but without the ability to make resource modifications, they can reboot and have console access.

I'd also like a Tenant admin to be able to reset AD User passwords and add/remove users from defined AD Groups that grant access to LOB applications.

I have configured LDAP, the vSphere Lookup Service, vCenter and NSX resources, created Storage Policies and assigned them to the existing VMs, configured SMTP.

I need to still deploy vRealize Operations Tenant Apps and vCD Management Pack.

But I think I am at the point I need to create a Provider VDC, Organization, and Organization VDC but am not sure about Network Pools, External Networks, and Edge Gateways as this has all been and will remain a managed service that is built out by us using old school designs for housing financial and public company data.

So can I do all of the above, how hard would it be to pull all the existing VMs and Tenant Resource Pools into vCD, would I need to change any of that configuration to make it easier?

Any recommendations on the Provider VDC in the above design along with all the networking pieces such as Pools, Networks, and Gateways?

10.0 appliance NFS issue

I'm testing vcloud 10.0.0. after the ovf deploy I'm able to connect to 5480 but here I see the msg

No nodes found in cluster, this likely means PostgreSQL is not running on this node. Consult the management UI from another node where PostgreSQL is running. Otherwise, check /opt/vmware/var/log/vcd/vcd_ova_ui_app.log if you think this is an error.

And I'm not able to connect to the admin portal.

On the NFS server I exported the shared directory, with the no_root_squash method. I did it adding the following line to the /etc/exports file:

192.x.y.z/nfsshare vCD_Cell1_IP_Address(rw,sync,no_subtree_check,no_root_squash)

I am using vCloud Director 9.7 with appliance install with the local Postgres database. I am trying to "whitelist" a number of ExtraConfig setting for an OVF I am trying to import.

I have done this with previous releases of MS SQL database backed vCloud Director however I am trying to understand what steps I need to undertake to apply the same setting via the 9.7 appliance with the integrated Postgres DB.

i am working on a company who would like to create a workflow in VRO in order to change the logo of the vCloud Directory portal.

The vCloud swagger API is giving me this request to execute ::

PUT /branding/logo

Sets the system level logo

I cannot manage to fill correctly the input needed :

I am using in parallel the postman application and i can manage to change the log easily.

So my question is :

How to do the same process as Postman but within VRO action ?

I have a vCD with, one interface is on the 10.50.1.0/24 network and has the address 10.50.1.60 (eth0) and the second (eth1) is on the 172.16.1.0/24 network and has the address 172.16.1.60. In network 172.16.1.0/24 I have RabbitMQ and I try to configure connection with vCD but in vCD I have error like below

I have configured routing between these networks on a firewall and can ping between networks.I don't know why it doesn't work. Can anyone help?

[Bug report] Suspected bug when importing OVF without information

We recently came across what we suspect to be a bug in vCloud Director 9.1 and 9.5, and possibly higher, although we have not tested any other versions.

Affected versions:

9.1 (don't have build number sorry)

9.5 build 12982517

The issue:

Importing an OVF file that does not contain the <OperatingSystemSection> information into vCloud Director via the Tenant portal GUI results in the following:

The "Customize Hardware" section does not show any VM's
The "Ready to Complete" summary shows no VM's
Upon clicking Finish, the no vApp is added and the GUI begins acting strangely. Clicking any other links in the GUI results in a never-ending load screen and the only way to recover the GUI is by refreshing the page. After doing so no vApp is present and repeating the procedure ends up with the same result.

Importing the exact same OVF into vCloud Director via the Flex /cloud interface or directly into the vCenter (6.5.0.20000) works fine.

The resolution:

After successfully importing other vApps via the Tenant portal and comparing them with the vApp that failed, we discovered that the failing vApp was missing the <OperatingSystemSection> details in the OVF. After adding in the below section to the OVF, importing the OVF via the Tenant portal worked fine.

Conclusion:

We believe this is a bug in vCloud Director because the Tenant portal should perform either of the below options, as opposed to crashing the GUI:

Allow importation of an OVF that does not contain <OperatingSystemSection> via the Tenant portal. It works fine via Flex /cloud or directly into vCenter.
Return an error that the <OperatingSystemSection> details are missing and the import failed.

vCloud Director 9.7 Appliance Disconnected

I'm having an issue on my new environment where the console says disconnected immediately after launching it, below is the screenshot from the developer tools .

if someone can please help.

when I look at the global.properties, I see both console and https are using the same IP and i see Postgres is using the other IP .

I thought eth0 was for https and eth1 was for the console ?

We're deploying VCD 10.0 based on the virtual appliance architecture with 3 cells. As you might know in this architecture the console proxy and UI use the same IP address with different ports. We need clarification about how to load balance the cells for Internet access. Our understanding is the UI port (TCP 443) is the one that needs to be balanced and the console proxy port (TCP 8443) needs direct access wihtout balancing, the one that we're confused is how to provide access from internet for console access since all cells are using the same TCP port and they will be accessed from the same public IP,

Terraform - vcloud director org - policy leases

Hi there,

I'm using terraform to create a vcloud org - vdc - org network and vapps in my lab.

I've noticed a few settings missing however and was wondering if it's still possible to apply them somehow.

For example, when creating a new org there are no arguments supporting the configuration of Org policy leases, such as maximum runtime lease, maximum storage lease.

This is the example from the terraform docs which is located at - vCloudDirector: vcd_org - Terraform by HashiCorp

How to share Org VDC Network with the other VDCs on VCD 10?

Hi,

I'm using VCD 10 integrated with NSX-T 2.5. As far I see, I can't share org VDC network with other Virtual Data Centers within the same organization. There is no any option to do it. I guess the reason is VCD is integrated with the NSX-T. Because, I can share the networks on VCD 9.5 which integrated with the NSX-V.

Is that possible for my case ? Is this option in the roadmap on the future or deprecated ?
