Hi,

I am trying to P2V a standalone ucs redhat server Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 6.9 (Santiago). A df -h shows the amount of space available, but I get the error::

FAILED: An error occurred during the conversion: ' Volume group "vg_berdev0051" has insufficient free space (58360 extents):574592 required. (return code 5)'

I have [lenty of available space. Can someone help me to figure out what the real issue is?

Does VMWare converter support Windows Server 2019 as source officially?

I have a Windows server 2019 machine on Hyper-V, and try to convert it to vCenter (or EXSi host)

VMWare Converter always reports an error: Unable to find the system volume, reconfiguration is not possible.

Check product release note, I found that Windows server 2019 is not in “Supported Guest Operating Systems”.

But on the “Known Issues” -> “Windows Source”, it talks about Windows server 2019, like:

“If you convert a Windows Server 2019 machine and you include a ReFS volume that....”

So, I’m a little confused, does Windows server 2019 is supported officially?

Transfer Rate issue on Vmware vCenter Converter

Hi All,

I am trying to convert a VM from AWS to our vCenter. I have several VMs that are Centos, Ubuntu, Windows 2012 R2, Windows 2008 etc. When i start convertion for Centos VMs, the speed is about 8 MB/s. But, when i try to convert a Windows VM, the speed is around 500 kb/s. The total speed between two sites is 100 Mbps. I have 1 TB Windows Machine, that's why this speed is a bit slow. Windows Machines are using 1 Gbit Network adapter.

What i did for resolving that issue;

-I have checked the pre-requisities for Windows VMs and i did but the speed is still the same.

-Disabled anti-virus program (ESET). It was deleted in one of the Windows Machines but speed was the same.

-Turned-off UAC

-Turned-off Firewall

-Disabled SSL Encryption from converter-worker.

-Increased the value in the Number of Data Connections in Converter

The speed is still slow for Windows based machines. I don't think that slow issue is related to network between two sites. Because i can see normal speeds for Centos Machines. Is there anyone who faced this kind of slow convertion issue ?

SSL Exception when Converter tries to connect to vCenter

Hi,

I want to migrate VMs from vCenter 5.5.0 U1b to vCenter 6.5 U1b using Converter Standalone 6.2.

When Converter tries to connect the source vCenter (5.5) I receive this error:

"A general system error occurred: SSL Exception: error:14077102:SSL routines:SSL23_GET_SERVER_HELLO:unsupported protocol"

The error seems to be related to the certificate.

Could you help me?

I'm having issues with uninstalling the VMware Converter Standalone agent keeps generating the following error: Could Not Stop Service When I check services, i'm unable to locate the VMWare Converter Standalone Agent service which i'm assuming requires the service to run before uninstallation. Hi all

Trying to upload a VM to ESXi 6.0 using VMware vCenter Converter Standalone version 6.2.0 but the task will not start giving the message "Invalid configuration for device '0'."

I don't know what this pertains to. The source VM came from Workstation 15 and I thought it may have to do with compatibility level. I tried changing the source VM level to 12 and to 11 but the same message appear. Anyone know what the solution might be?

VMWare Converter 6.2 does not migrate correctly multiple swap partitions

When the source server has multiple swap volumes on LVM, VMWare Converter 6.2 migrates them all but uses in /etc/fstab only the last volume's name, causing only one of the swap volumes to be used for swapping and the following kind of errors at boot:

systemd-fstab-generator[1460]: Failed to create swap unit file /run/systemd/generator/dev-vg_rhel7-lv_swap2.swap, as it already exists. Duplicate entry in /etc/fstab?

When the source server had following entries:

/dev/vg_rhel7/lv_swap swap swap defaults 0 0

/dev/vg_rhel7/lv_swap2 swap swap defaults 0 0

... then the Converter generated following entries to /etc/fstab in the resulting server:

/dev/vg_rhel7/lv_swap2 swap swap defaults 0 0

Since the swap volumes themselves are correctly migrated the only change required is to fix the volume names in /etc/fstab for the swap entries.

Windows could not start the VMWare vCenter Converter

I'm using vCenter Converter standalone on a Windows 2008 server SP2.

In windows services panel, I found all the services of vCenter converter (Agent, Server and Worker) are not started.

When I was trying to start them manually, I got an error message saying "Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion".

I've already added an entry [ServicesPipeTimeout] in my registry [HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control], and I set its value to 3000000000.

However, after I restarted the computer, these services still can't start. The error message was the same as before.

Anyone can help ?

vConverter does not accept a NAS as the Destination

Hello,

I am trying to do a P2V conversion of a Windows 7 system running vConverter version 6.2.

I would prefer to store the file created by vConverter on a NAS but it rejects it saying it cannot find the file - extension is .vmc.

However, other applications can write to the NAS.

The NAS is mounted to the Z: drive. The program did create a directory but stops there.

Any advice would be welcome.

I attempted to install VMware vCenter Standalone Client ver. 6.2 on my Dell 8700 PC running Windows 8.1. I selected to do a local install only. The install failed with an error something like "The service could not be started."

I tried to remove installation, reboot, and install again. Same problem.

It seemed to finish installing so I am able to start the application. But I get the following error message:

I am trying to migrate a server of approximately 3.5 TB of disk in USE, this is a database computer with SQL. I'm taking it to VMware 5.5.0 with the Standalone Converter version 6.1.1.

The problem is that I am already 3 attempts of migration and in all the same error seems to me, in the names of the files leave as additional data the% in which they fail.

Seek help with some colleagues but they only found me an error where the connection is interrupted but does not indicate the specific reason.

Shrinking disks

I need to use VMware Converter to shrink VMs (hosted by VMware ESXi 6.5 hosts) with thin vmdk disks.

Disks are overallocated, so that a thin vmdk disk whose size is 300 GB hosts a Windows partition whose size is 100 GB.

I need to reduce the size of the vmdk disk to the same as the guest partition.

I was told that VMware Converter is the best solution to solve the problem and I made some tests with version 6.2.

I got contraddictory results as:

The size of the vmdk disks is reduced as expected
The VM gets a wrong IP address
The Windows VMs need to be reactivated

Is there a way to preserve the VM configuration?

Should I use a different version of VMware Converter?

Should I use any other solution to get the same result?

Is there any way to schedule the conversion via command line?

Unable to create virtual machine XXX after submitting job on converter

Hi,

With vCenter Converter 6.2.0 on my Windows 10 computer , I tried to convert Windows server 2016 from a physical box to a VM on EXSi 6.7 with the source machine's local administrator account.

I always got error message

and "GetTokenInformation failed: 1312" on converter log even after disable both UAC and firewall on the 2016.

Also, I am confused I chosen 3 HDs (C, E and F) and Windows restored partitions to concert.

and the source has 2 HDs:

But, on the Summary picture above I only can see Number of disks: 2

I am not sure that is no issue.

VMware converter SSL Verification

Hi,

may anyone have/had same issue.

i had 6.0 U3 latest vcenter and hosts.

and i converted some vm's from Hyper-V to Vmware Side.

i then upgraded vcenter to 6.7 U3.

since then i'am not able to convert anymore.

i tried

- Re/installed Agent on Client Side

- Re/installed Converter on Server

i don't understand why that SSLVerificationFault happens. i also tried to convert directly to esxi 6.0. getting kinda user/password error. but user and pass is right.

only working way in moment is to convert through UNC path and then to import to vCenter.

any thoughts what that could be and how to solve it? as Converter seems long time not maintained.

Hello

I'm curious if there are plans to make the previous versions available for download anymore? A few days ago when I go to the Download Product link for Converter Standalone there were 3 available options. Now, as of this past Friday, if you select anything other than 6.2 the page says the Binaries are missing.

This is a problem given the fact that I can't seem to get 6.2 to even install properly. There are other posts in this Forum with the same issue attempting to install 6.2. I've seen mention that using version 6.0 works with no problems. But of course, 6.0 is now missing from download link.

shrink a vmdk from a mac hosted vmware

i am running vmware fusion (10.0.1) on a Mac (Mojave 10.14.6)

need to reduce the virtual disk from 240 GB to 140 GB on a Windows 10 x64 installation within the VM. i have logged into windows and reduced the C partition from the original 240 GB to 140 GB.

however, when i try to reduce the VMDK via the settings menu, it tells me that 240 MB is the minimum amount allowed.

other threads mention using VCenter Converter Standalone to reduce the size of the VMDK, but this appears to be a Windows-only application.

i am very much a noob at this, is there a way to reduce the drive for a mac-based VM?

Hi,

There seems to be 2 methods by which to turn a physical PC into a VM:

1) Using the vCentre Conversion Tool

2) Getting a disk image of the PC and creating a new VM using that disk image

My question is are there any pros / cons of using either method or do they both produce the same result?

In my case, it's easier for the client to give me a disk image of the PC but I would personally rather use the conversion tool if possible as it's for the purpose intended.

Unable to query the live source machine - from debian wheezy

For beginning, I'm sorry for my poor english.

I need to convert a physical server to a virtual machine. But I can't because I have always this error : 'Unable to query the live source machine."

I had already convert two physical servers in a same LAN with the same VMWare convertor with success.

I have check all step on VMware Knowledge Base,

1. I can sign in with root on the physical machine.

2. I can connect the physical machine from Windows 10 which content VMWare convertor with putty.

3. I checked '.bashrc' on '/root' folder and there isn't line beginning by echo command.

4. Root user can sign in and passwd file is ok.

5. 'tmp' folder isn't a partition but I can create folder and file on this folder and right is :

ls -lisa /tmp/

1177346 4 drwxrwxrwt 23 root root 4096 Jul 21 20:38 .

I run VMware convertun such as administrator. You can't find log of my VMware convertor in attachment.

Increasing the cloning performance

There have been many complaints about transfer rate degradation in Converter 5.0.

Converter uses NFC (a proprietary VMware protocol) for cloning to managed destination. Security has been enhanced in Converter 5.0 by encrypting the data transfer. Unfortunately this has caused a more severe performance degradation than expected.
Switching off SSL encryption is a way to work around this issue. Here is how it is done:

Open the converter-worker.xml configuration file. It is located in "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone" folder for Windows Vista or newer or in "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone" for older Windows versions.
Set the key Config/nfc/useSsl to false and save the configuration file.
Restart "VMware vCenter Converter Standalone Worker" service.

I.e. it should look like:

    ...
    <nfc>
       <readTimeoutMs>120000</readTimeoutMs>
       <useSsl>false</useSsl>
    ...

Converter Hyper-V to Vmware

Hi guru

I would like to know what the heck am I doing wrong:

I have a windows 2008 R2 enterprise in Hyper-v that I would like to convert to a VMware Virtual server.

I have tried to do the standalone converter install on the source machine and all is cool but the virtual machine created in Vcenter require to be fix using windows Installation disk, so it does not boot up.

Has anyone here been lucky converting 2008 r2 ent. to vm server that converter correctly?

Hello,

I'm trying to p2v a redhat in a HP BL460c with the new converter 4 standalone.

I give an error "Unable to connect to the Converter helper server on the target virtual machine". And the Status on the "task progress" tab is "FAILED. Failed to communicate with the remote host, either due to network errors or because the host is not responding".

I'll found this error in documentation & forums, but I have no luck, maybe someone can help me with this issue. I attach the log files.

Vmware converter hyper-V error

Hello,

I am trying to convert a Hyper-V VM via the Vmware converter. The VM is shutdown.

Through the conversion wizard i use the local administrator account on the hyper-V node, and it lists all the VM's.

I select the turned off VM and it reports to collect vm information, when i get an error that indicates that it is unable to open the vhd file. The administrator account has full rights to the file of couse.

VMware Vcentre Converter Fails to create virtual machine at ~33% with error code: 395

Hi,

trying to create a virtual machine of current computer. At 33% or thereabouts I get the following message

"FAILED: An error occurred during the conversion: 'File-level volume clone error failed with sourcevolume id \WindowsBitmapDriverVolumeId=[0E-83-13-00-00-00-10-00-00-00-00-00] and target volume id >03(31000000010000000000. Error code:395'"

I cannot find any information on error 395. Im doing the same thing I have done before, so im not sure where I am going wrong. I wen through log file but I do not understand enough of what is going wrong to work it out. Has anyone had this issue before and did you solve it?
