Vmware 5.5.4 uses up all the phycisal memory on Vista host

I have a VMware 5.5.4 on Vista laptop. It has 2GB physical RAM. I can launch WMware with no issues. But if I try to start up a virtual mahcine, VMware uses up all the physical memory and hard disk is very busy. I guess it's doing the page swap. After quite a while, vmwae releases most of the 2GB memory and the guest OS begins to start up normally.

I assigned 382 MB RAM to the guest and reserved 1024 MB RAM for VMware. I tried adjusting allocated memories, no help. Anyone can help me out?

Thanks.

Well, Workstation 5.5.x only had experimental support for Vista hosts. You should upgrade to version 6 to be supported on a Vista host (and have most of those kinds of issues resolved).

I understand it. But it looked like 5.5.4 worked with others through my search online. Are they all have this problem? If not, any hints?
