What is your host OS?

Please give complete details of the hardware in your PC (CPU make/model..etc)

IF this is a Windows host, what is the exact content of the blue screen stop code?

The host OS is WIndows 2000 Professional with SP4. The workstation is an AMD Athlon 64 with 2GB of RAM. The VM is being allocated 30 GB of space. I'm trying to create a VM with the same OS as the host; the host OS works without a problem on the system. The system resets so quickly I don't get to read the error code flashed on the VM. I receive the same result when trying to create a VM using a Windows XP guest OS.

Can you turn off "Auto Reboot" in the Startup / Recovery " options on the host, so you can capture the blue screen stop code.

Post the .vmx file from this virtual machine

Blue screens with the following:

STOP 0x0000001E (0xC0000005, 0x8049A8F7, 0x00000000, 0x0000002B KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

Any ideas what may be causing it?
