..\Local Settings\Application Data\VMware\hgfs.dat

Anyone know much about this file on VM guests? I'm assuming it's part of the VMtools. it's always in use and backup programs complain it can't be backed up.

Need to understand if I need it or not in a recovery situation.

It's the shared files option which isn't supported on ESX but gets installed if you did a complete install of VMware Tools.

Here's an article to fix that: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=1317&slice...

Thanks. I course I could have searched the KB myself, but that would mean I would need to think. You deserve the points for my laziness!

I have the same issue, but the kb article does not apply to my ESX version (3.0.1). Also, I do not use roaming profiles.

Can I safely assume that it was because VMTools were installed via the "complete" option even though my ESX version is not listed? I was at one point version 2.5.2, but we upgraded.

Thanks...
