I am trying to copy files from Mac to OSX and am getting a message "Cannot scan local directory. You may not have permission to perform the operation". I picked another file to copy and it worked fine. Any thoughts as to why I can copy one file and not another?
Thanks

You might not have access permissions to the first file?
I did cmd-I and it says I can read and write. Anything else I should look for?
I am a little bit confused about what you are trying to do...you said: "copy files from Mac to OSX". Did you mean between a VM and OS X? If so, what guest operating system are you running? Who is giving you the error? The guest? The host?
Ciao, Andreas
If the file didn't have permission, the error would be "file", but your error says "directory".
When I tried to copy a file I didn't have permissions to, I got this popup (also in my vmware.log file)
Jun 13 19:49:20.999: vmx| Msg_Post: ErrorJun 13 19:49:20.999: vmx| \[msg.dnd.noGetType] Cannot determine local file size. You may not have permission to perform the operation.Jun 13 19:49:20.999: vmx| Aborting the file copy operation.Jun 13 19:49:20.999: vmx| \----
When I tried to copy a file in a directory I didn't have permission to access my error was:
Jun 13 19:59:26.590: vmx| Msg_Post: Error
Jun 13 19:59:26.590: vmx| \[msg.dnd.noGetType] Cannot determine local file type. You may not have permission to perform the operation.
Jun 13 19:59:26.590: vmx| Aborting the file copy operation.
Jun 13 19:59:26.590: vmx| \----
Is there anything special about that file or the directory it is in? Or is there anything special about to directory you are copying to?
Sorry, yes I meant copy a file from OS X to the VM.

I was trying to copy a folder from my local folder of OS X (which I do have permission) to the desktop of the VM. I tried the same thing with a single file and it worked. I do not understand why I am unable to copy a file but not a folder. I did cmd-I and it indicates I have read and write permssion on the folder.
I get similar issues.
Make sure you have updated VMware Tools in your VM, go to Install VMware Tools in the Virtual Machine menu.
If this doesn't help, try uninstalling tools and then reinstalling tools and see if this helps.

I don`t think that it would help, b`cause I`ve tried your solution and it didn`t work. Please advice, I have the same problem as it mentionned above. Is it a bug, isn`t it?
What is the exact name of the file your are trying to copy?
I had the exact same problem trying to copy a bunch of folders from host to guest. I then tried folder by folder, noting that some worked and some did not.
Repeating the process for files in the non-working folders, I narrowed the problem down to some PDF files that the user had created with an ellipsis (...) character (U+2026) in the filename. As soon as I renamed the file to remove the offending character I could copy the file.
See if renaming the file fixes it. Your mileage may vary.
As noted above, simply re-naming the offending file[/u] in fact worked for me as well. In my particular case a folder had the "" (trademark) symbol in the file name. Once I removed the TM symbol the drag-and-drop function worked like a charm.
I hope that helped.

Software: VMware Workstation ACE Edition; version 6.0.0 build-45731
Host OS: Server 2003 Enterprise Edition SP2
Error Info: "Cannot scan local directory. You may not have permission to perform the operation. Aborting the file copy operation."
kmeagher, mwilliamsklassmaster: Interesting, thanks for tracking this down. Any other characters that are problematic?
I haven't come across any other characters that cause this problem, but mostly because I haven't looked. In my situation, all the problem filenames were PDFs created from Word, so it was always the ellipsis character in the filename causing the problem.
Is it the characters being non-ASCII that causes the failure?

I don't know, but my guess is this is probably the right direction. I'd think that if it were all[/i] non-ASCII characters I would have heard about it before - for example, I can DnD a file with a name containing é or あ. I've filed a bug internally.
Edit: Actually, I just tried and , and they worked as well. kmeagher, to confirm, you're using Fusion? What version of Tools do you have installed? -etung 2007.08.22 13:58
No, sorry to confuse the issue. I'm actually using VM Workstation 6 on a Windows Vista Business Host and WinXP SP2 guest. I posted in this thread and one other because they were having the exact same error message, and thought that it might be the same filename issue I was having.
The VMWare Tools for Windows I'm using is build 45731.

Guess I shouldn't call it "the exact same problem", more like "a similar problem on Windows host OS".
mwilliamsklassmaster, kmeagher: To follow up, I was able to DnD files with … or ™ with Workstation 6.0.1 (I didn't try with 6.0.0). Can you see if this fixes your problems?
This error message can also appear if you are copying files which are in folders with names that are too long (or folders with lengths that are not supported in your destination machine)
In my case I had nested folders with GUIDS and they were too long. As soon as I removed them the copy went through fine and the scan permissions error did not appear
my problem was that one of my files in my directory was opened and so vmware gives me this error message too.
so just have a look at your opened files and close this.
Hi
I had the same problem but managed to solve it.
In my case I had a Windows 7 guest and Windows 7 host.
The folder I was copying was on a USB drive on the host. I was trying to copy it to the guest.
That was when I saw the same error message you have reported from windows 7 virtual machine.
I got around the problem by copying the file from the USB drive to my host machines desktop. Then copying from the host machines desktop to
the windows 7 virtual machine.
I hope my experience helps.
