Windows 2000 server, failed to take snapshot of a source volume

When i try to convert my windows 2000 server to my ESX, i get the following error:

---

ERROR: Failed to take snapshot of a source volume.

Possible causes include not having any NTFS volumes on Windows XP or Windows 2003 source systems,

and not having enough free disk space.

---

The harddisk on the win2000 is 16gb and only 4gb is in use, and there is plenty of free space on the ESX.

Any one have an idea how to fix this error ?

If the log file can to any use, they are here.

Many thanks in front Smiley Happy

ERROR: Failed to take snapshot of a source volume

Just wondering if anyone has resolved this issue. We are experiencing the same error and need to convert a win2k server

We have loaded converter with local admin account and ran checkdisk.

can you detail your physical and destination?

the steps you chose?

the version of converter?

the user you used and where converter was installed?

any heavy apps running on the physical?

hi,

i have the same problem

i will convert a windows 2000 server to a esx 3

i use the vmconverter 3.0.1 (local) with the admin user

all disk are ntfs volume, enough free space on physical and esx server,

chkdsk not found any problems and i stop all heavy apps local.

any ideas?

check out the size of the block size, I had similar issues and had to increase the size of the block size, once I did this, conversion went through with no issues

To be more specific - if your output vmdk file is greater then 256mb, then your default blocksize for your ESX /vmfs partition of 1mb is not enough to store the file. You only need to adjust the blocksize if you require file sizes greater of which your current blocksize can accomidate.

Can you post logs from your vmware-converter#.log file?

Can you reinstall converter directly to the source physical machine as the "local" admin and not a member of the group or a domain admin.

OK, I am having the same problem and reinstalled converter as local admin and ran it as local admin, I am still getting the error. I notice at the time of the failure, I get the error in the windows event log. Event ID 8193

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine CoCreateInstance. hr = 0x80004002.

Here is the vm logs.

I cant tell what is the cause based on the small truncated logs you submitted.

However, be sure you restart windows NT4 and 2000 after installing to ensure the install of (our version of) Shadow Copy is complete.

Im having the same issue with a 2003 server. I have manually installed the Converter Agent using the local admin account, rebooted, each time I've removed or installed the agent I've rebooted. I've turned on Volume Shadow Copy, ran a chkdsk, resized disks, split image into 2gb, tried to do stand alone and import into ESX all to no avail. Converter reaches 2% and fails. Available is 292GB Im attempting a 15GB image. fails.

Using build 62546 of Converter.

Anyone?

I have the same error with a Windows 2003 server. The service "Microsoft software Shadow copy provider" was disabled then i enabled and started it and then works very well.
