While working in my lab I accidentally removed ALL permissions from a VM. The VM no longer shows up in VC and when I try recreating it I receive the message that it already exists. Any ideas??
If you remember which disk the vm was stored on, you can use the datastore browser to find the .vmx file for the vm and register it back into the inventory.
Also, try using the VI Client and logging in as root to connect directly to your ESX host(s) until you find the VM. You can modify permissions there.

What version of VC are your running?
I've tried to do this intentionally, but VC (2.0.1) would not allow me to do so. I'm curious how you accomplished this.
Thanks,
J
