Virtual Center Heartbeat Problem.

Hi everyone,

This problem is driving me nuts and I'm hoping that someone can help. I'm trying to use connect my ESX 3.0.1 host to my Virtual Center 2.0 server. I have all of the latest hotfixes and patches installed.

Using the VI Client, I connect to my Virtual Center server, then add my ESX Host to the inventory. The host remains connected for about one minute, and then changes to a state of "not responding". If I disconnect the host and then reconnect it, the same thing happens after about one minute.

When I check my /var/log/vmware/vpx/vpxa.log files, I see the following errors:

'App' 167164848 error] Failed to bind heartbeat socket

\[2007-03-20 12:07:56.904 'App' 3076440992 error] \[VpxVmdbCnx] Authd error: 514 Error connecting to hostd-vmdb service instance.

\[2007-03-20 12:07:56.904 'App' 3076440992 error] \[VpxVmdbCnx] Failed to connect to host :902. Check that authd is running correctly (lib/connect error 11)

I have opened firewall traffic between my ESX Host and VC Server for every tcp and udp port but still no success. I've even tried reinstalling the vpxa agent and VMWare support is no help. I see others have had this problem, but I am unable to find any who have resolved it.

Any help is appreciated.

It sounds like you need to disconnect your ESX host from VirtualCenter, remove the vpx agent from ESX, and then re-connect ESX to VC.

I have heard that some of the recent VC2 patches result in the vpx agent not being properly upgraded on the ESX hosts.

I had this issue after upgrading the VC, this did the trick..

service mgmt-vmware restart

service vmware-vmkauthd restart (didnt actually do this one..)

service vmware-vpxa restart

If not, see if this troubleshooting VC helps..

Thanks for the responses guys.

I've already tried restarting all of those services and restarted the server many times.

How do I go about uninstalling the agent from the ESX host? I had simply copied the esx agent file from my VC Server to my ESX host, and reinstalled it that way. If there is another way, please let me know.

Thanks.
