USB license dongle on guest

Hi!

We are running ESX server 3.0.1.

On one of the guest (windows 2003) running on the ESX we need to connect a USB license dongle to get some software running.

I have connected the USB dongle to the ESX server. Is it possible for the guest to connect to that dongle. Or will I need some thirdparty stuff like AnywhereUSB?

Thanks

Anders

ESX, doesn't support USB.

To make it work you need or a USB over IP tools, or to ask to the supplier of software, to give you a serial or com port dongle instead, because that is supported.

Ok. Thanks!

The dongles don't come as serial. They make them for the printer port but we don't have a parallel port in our ESX.

So I just ordered this:

Hopefully it will do the job...

You will also have to install drivers for the dongle in many cases after you configure the USBAnywhere device. We have it working with Sentinel keys.

What is the product? For mine I went to the manufacturers web site and downloaded the driver package. If you provide a product I can attempt to point you at the proper package.

Ok!

My dongle is also a Sentinel safenet superpro. So I am glad to know, that it actually is possible to get this kind of license dongle to run on a vmware guest.

Thanks Smiley Happy

Got my AnywhereUSB unit to day. My USB license dongle works Smiley Happy

I am a little bit disappointed about the security in the AnywhereUSB unit. Actually there is none. Anybody can if they have the AnywhereUSB software installed configure, reboot or use the unit. They could at least have protected the unit by an configure password. Smiley Sad

But anyway, the unit solved an urgent problem...

I use a KeySpan 4 port USB server that doesn't have this limitation...
