No, I think you have to turn it off before importing.

You could try vmware converter. With vmware converter, you can clone a VM while it's on (hotclone).

I used the VMware converter (Hot Clone ) and converted P2V, stored to temp server, then uploaded the converted VM to the ESX datastore, files: *.vmx and *.vmdk. I added the VM ( *.vmx ) to inventory but I cannot power it on. I cannot event edit SCSI Discs, NIC's, USB's. I can edit memory, # of CPU's. I'm new to vmware. Any suggestions?

If you install Converter directly inside the virtual machine running on Server 1.0.x (windows only), you can make a copy directly on an ESX host.

If it's a non-windows system, you can follow this document to migrate the VMDK files from Server to ESX:

http://kb.vmware.com/kb/900/

dkgcb: same rules apply here. If you install converter directly onto the Windows OS you want to migrate, it should go direct to ESX. re-run converter against the stand alone files you have (prior to the upload), and send it direct to ESX.

The VMX/VMDK format is slightly different on ESX than any of the available "standalone" formats. this would probably explain why it won't power on.
