VCB with NetBackup 5.1

Anyone have any luck getting this running? I have gone over the unclear documentation. I just get the in the pre command log:

Unknown error: The system cannot find the file specified.

Exit Code: -2147024894

I'm wondering about the "HOST" param in the config.js file. We are running Virtual Center so I assume "HOST" is the Virtual Center server. We created a vcbadmin account on the Virtual Center servera and this is the account whose credentials we put in config.js.

I would REALLY appreciate some guidance. Thanks

Sean

You have to make sure you run VCB on a master server not just a media server.

I am running it on neither. My VCB Proxy is just a NetBackup client. My Master server is a Linux box. It sounds like this is the core of the trouble though. Please elaborate if you can. Is it working for you?

Yeah that is not going to work from our experience. The documentation is not clear but bascially you need to make sure the VCB proxy is a master server, since all the Netbackup libraries and scripts will be running on this host. You will have to install a windows master server and go from there.

I made the same mistake as you hoping that the VBC just has to have a Netbackup client agent. I called tech support and they helped me set this up properly - after like 5 hours or so.

It would be interesting to see what they say about your situation.

That will be bad if what you say is true. The install instructions make it clear that the VBC proxy does not need to be the master server. We are being led to believe that if we just install the Netbackup Administration Console on the client we will have the hooks in place to get this working. I'm working on that angle.

I think that might work... since it the VCB just needs to run a bunch of Netbackup functions using scripts... so the admin console might do the trick.

I have a new error after installing the NetBackup Administration Console on the proxy:

\[2006-12-27 17:28:27.372 'App' 3508 info] Current working directory: C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Consolidated Backup Framework

\[2006-12-27 17:28:28.903 'vcbMounter' 3508 error] Error: Other error encountered: Cannot connect to host anpwvvc1: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it

The Virtual Center server is refusing the connection for some reason.

OK, I'm fixed. VMware tech support helped. My problem was that the port setting in config.js did not match the port setting in Virtual Center. Virtual Center TCP/IP port was set at a non-default 902. I changed config.js setting to match and it worked. Backups working.

So you just had to install the Netbackup admin tools on the VCB?

Basically, that was it. Once we got the config file correct and the Admin Console installed on the client, it started working. The NBU console does not need to be configured correctly -we cannot make a connection to the master server- VCB proxy needs some of the commands in the admincmd dir created by the console install.

We are having the same problem with NBU v5.1 using VCB 1.02 and have the Admin Console and NetBackup plugin installed on the win2k3 VCB host. We get an error 66 for the job status in NBU and in the C:\WINDOWS\Temp\pre_vcbtest#######.log file (vcbtest is our NBU policy name) we get a single entry "Failed to retrieve job's selection list" However we are able to manually mount the VMDK using "bpbrowse-start.bat vcbtest vm1.company.com " and see the vmdk mounted in C:\mnt.

Plan to calll support in the morning but figured I would post our issue here too.

I am having the same problem, but I have VCB with NetBackup 6.0 though.

I called tech support, and I was told to put a line into "C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Consolidated Backup Framework\generic\glue.js" so that it can generate a more detail log in to %WINDIR%Temp. The line that is supposed to add was:

cmd += " -L 6 ";

And the place that this line should go to is in the glue.js file, in the function "PrepareForBackup", right underneath

cmd = StdCommandTemplate(vmMounterCmd);

However, I still haven't been able to find the detail log files he mentioned. I left him a message and asked him what else I needed to do. He said he needed the log file before he could help me. But the log files aren't there although I did what he told me to. I asked him again, and he said the log files aren't in c:\windows\temp, but inC:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp.

I tried to look for it, but still can't find them. Let him message again, but he still hasn't get back to me yet.

The VCB server was running fine, and it seemed it stopped working properly when I upgrade NetBackup to 6.0. Does anyone have VCB working with NetBackup 6.0?

if so, please let us know??

I have been struggling with all of these same issues. It seems like the real issue is that NetBackup will not work with VCB if just a regular NBU client is installed on the proxy server

You can get away with installing the Admin Console, whose main purpose is to install the binaries found in admincmd. This alone will not work however, you must now put an entry in the bp.conf of your master server listing the VCB proxy box as a "SERVER" so the admincmd commands have permission to execute.

Once this was done it all started to work.
