Unable to detect USB on Linux MINT VM

Running VMWare Workstation PRO.  Installed Linux MINT version 19 as a VM.  Insert a USB and have it connect to the VM via the removable devices menu item.  USB doesn't show up when running fdisk -l and there is no usb directory under /proc/bus.  Tried multiple different USB sticks with the same results.  Any suggestions?

Please provide more details, e.g. host operating system (Win 10?), version of Mint (19.3?), version of USB (2 or 3?). Does this happen to all virtual machines or only this one? What happens when you connect an external hard disk?

If on Windows, is the USB Arbitration Service running (see your local services list by running services.msc)?
