Aladdin HASP 2.17 connection issue

I've used Workstation (12?) with this dongle before, but now I come to run it on a new laptop (Windows 10 Professional (x64) Version 1909 (build 18363.752)) I am having problems.  VM presents the USB dongle as a removable device, but when I connect it, the HASP LED blinks once and goes off. The device shows as connected (green indicator on icon) but still offers the option to connect. Trying to reconnect results in an "unknown error" message. Any suggestions?

Vmware workstation 12 does not support any version of Windows 10 from version 1703 onwards, as the host of the operating system:

Apologies, I shoulkd have been clearer. The Host system is Windows 10, the client system is Win2k Pro. The previous laptop was running Windows 10 pre-build 1703 and using Workstation 12
