For this problem I currently have the following config in VM settings -> Display
- retina screen unchecked
- Full screen: Stretch the virtual machine in the screen
Personally I wish they left screen resolution alone when in full screen.
There's another way and that's going to the VMware Tools folder, locate a file called VMwareResolutionSet.exe and rename it into VMwareResolutionSet.exe.old
The latter solution isn't ideal, but it does stop the madness if you can't find the ideal combination of display settings and want to overrule the "helping" adjustments.

That was the varmint, thanks! Unchecked the Retina display box and it stopped going microscopic. I'll play with the other setting it to see what impact it has, now that I can actually SEE things again. :-}
Another thing I'd like to see is the options plainly labelled "built-in display" versus "external display". The way it's marked now is rather cryptic.
