    Fusion 11.5.1 - Windows 10 resolution changes every time I move back to Mac desktop

    Teleprinman Lurker

      Having a rough time moving to Fusion 11.5.1 on a new machine from using Fusion 7, which was pretty dang smooth compared to THESE hiccups.  New machine is MacBook Pro running 10.14.

      Related side rant:  VMWare Tools installation is really clunky.  I think it took 5 restarts before Tools was happy?  And that's only after I figured out the weird installation procedure, and copied the installer files out of the virtual CD so the installer didn't crash after asking for a restart.  Anyways, finally got Tools running, as proven by now being able to use Shared folders like I'm used to, and  being able to copy/paste between Win and Mac sides, which weren't working before Tools install.

      The New Horrible Problem is that every time I click or move out of the Windows screen to the Mac side, Windows screen resolution immediately jumps to maximum resolution, which is makes everything microscopic and UNREADABLE.  I have learned how to navigate blindly into the Windows display settings and pick an off resolution, then Revert, to make it display at a READABLE resolution, but it won't stay that way no matter what I try.  I've dug through Windows extensively with no improvement.

      I'm pretty sure this is Fusion's fault since it wasn't happening before the Tools installation.  Anyone else encountered and fixed this problem?

          Hi,

          For this problem I currently have the following config in VM settings -> Display

          - retina screen unchecked

          - Full screen: Stretch the virtual machine in the screen

          Personally I wish they left screen resolution alone when in full screen.

          There's another way and that's going to the VMware Tools folder, locate a file called VMwareResolutionSet.exe and rename it into VMwareResolutionSet.exe.old

          The latter solution isn't ideal, but it does stop the madness if you can't find the ideal combination of display settings and want to overrule the "helping" adjustments.

            That was the varmint, thanks!  Unchecked the Retina display box and it stopped going microscopic.  I'll play with the other setting it to see what impact it has, now that I can actually SEE things again.  :-}

            Another thing I'd like to see is the options plainly labelled "built-in display" versus "external display".  The way it's marked now is rather cryptic.
