    Backup VM Job

    pan1268 Enthusiast

      Hello Experts,

We have a situation where in our vCenter server backup jobs get stuck at various %s ( 0%, 70%, 99% and so on )  and when I look at the event log I see the following events ( bottom to top)

      Remove snapshot - completed

      Rename snapshot - completed

      Create VM snapshot - Completed

      Remove snapshot - Completed

      Rename Snapshot - Completed

      Backup VM scheduled - Completed

      Create VM snapshot - Completed

Backup VM scheduled - ( showing stuck at 99% ).

However the backup for the VM is happening successfully but the job which is stuck at 99% will remain like this until i manualy cancel it. this is happening for many VMs in the environment. We are using Tivoli for taking VM backup.

Initially, I suspected this could be because of vCenter to backup server dis connectivity and therefore killed all the stuck jobs but now this is happening quite frequently. Could you please advice what is going wrong here.

      Many thanks in advance.

          Hi

Did you try that backup operation when the VM is added directly from the ESXi without the vCenter's act (so I mean you must have a direct connection from tivoli to the host not the vCenter server)?

            Hi Amin,

No we have not tried it. Are there any logs in vCenter or Tivoli I can see what is going on ?

            Cheers

I'm not sure about the Tivoli log file path, but for the VCSA please check the following log files:

              /storage/log/vmware/vapi/endpoint/endpint.log

              /storage/log/vmware/vsan-health/vsanvp.log

              /storage/log/vmware/vsan-health/vsanvcmgmtd.log

              /storage/log/vmware/vapi/endpoint/endpint.log

              /storage/log/vmware/vsm/vsm.log

              /storage/log/vmware/vpxd/vpxd.log

              /storage/log/vmware/syslog/syslog.log

You can back up virtual machines from a subclient or from a reinforcement set (to incorporate all subclients for the reinforcement set). For each subclient, you should add the virtual machines to be sponsored up in the subclient content.
