Upgrade esxi hosts with SAN.

Hi Experts,

While upgrading / Installing ESXi hosts from 5.5 to 6.5 which are using SAN(HBA's), is it necessary to detach the fibre before continuing with the upgrade?

Will the datastore's content be wiped-off if we do not detach?

I will be using update manger OR esxcli for upgrade.

Thank you.

Hi,

It is not necessary to detach LUN but I recommend to do that Smiley Happy

You will be sure that you don't wipe off any data (for example by mistake).

I think it should be done from Storage Array site or SAN. Your storage/SAN admin should know how to do that.

But never deactivate the hba in bios temporarely, the update process cant detect the hba´s then.

you can also plugout the cables if your datacenter ist not far away. or deactivate the fc-switchports

I highly recommend not to make any changes to your datastores for the upgrade. Storage should continue to operate fine before and after the upgrade. The data on the datastores will not be wiped.
