DirectPath I/O set on VMs and related consequences

Hello everyone.. I have a question/case to submit to the experts evaluation. I was called on a customer site where VI has several performance issues. While analyzing the VI I was asked to have a look at a VM which lost network connectivity. I realised the VM had directpath enabled on its settings but not at the ESXi level. So according to this KB all seems innocent VMware Knowledge Base

However when I disabled it the VM was reachable again. I then realised that 70% of all VMs had directpath enabled. I started looking at few critical VMs performance and noticed that they were losing packets (real time monitoring). When I disabled the directpath the packets loss stopped.

Now.. according to the KB the setting seems to be irrelevant, however this experience is telling me the opposite... any has experienced something similar or has an explanation? I believe that although the ESXi level is not configured, the option enabled at the VM level has an impact on the VMXNET3 functioning..
