Workstation 15.5 for linux installation fails

The installation or upgrade from VMware Workstation 15.0.2 pro to 15.5 on a linux host (debian 10) fails with the error:

> Extracting VMware Installer...done.

> Uninstalling VMware Player Application 15.1.0bora/lib/string/str.c:284 Buffer too small

>

> VMware Workstation Error:

> VMware Workstation unrecoverable error: (host-6443)

> bora/lib/string/str.c:284 Buffer too small

The installation of the previous version 15.0.2 on the same host works fine.

Does anybody have some hints for me please?

This issue caused by some multi-language environment that has been identified.

currently there are two workaround can work fine:

1. Set or export LC_ALL=C before running the installer, then the upgrade proceeds successfully. Thanks @superduke31 @j2rome.

2. Change the OS Region & Language to English. then the upgrade proceeds successfully. After a successful installation/upgrading,  you could switch back to any language you prefer to continue to use workstation.

Thanks a lot for you guys for your great enthusiasm for workstation. Feel free to let us know if you have any concerns on workstation.

You can request support.

To collect data to submit to VMware support, choose "Collect Support Data" from the Help menu.

You can also run the "vm-support" script in the Workstation folder directly.

We will respond on the basis of your support entitlement.

Hi,

Thank you for your patience. We couldn't repro this issue in lab. Could you please help to share your installer log to us (/var/log/vmware-installer)? Thanks.

Try to uninstall the pervious version and install the new version, maybe it will work.

If the pervious version can't be uninstall, try to re-install the same version, and then uninstall it.

I have the same Problem:

I use openSUSE Leap 15.1. and until this morning I ran VMware Workstation Pro 15,1.

During installation of 15.5 the existing product got uninstalled first (which worked). The installation process then crashed.

I had to run a retry interactively from a terminal and I get this output:

Mozart:/tmp # ./VMware-Workstation-Full-15.5.0-14665864.x86_64.bundle

Extracting VMware Installer...done.

Uninstalling VMware Player Application 15.1.0

You can request support.

To collect data to submit to VMware support, choose "Collect Support Data" from the Help menu.

You can also run the "vm-support" script in the Workstation folder directly.

We will respond on the basis of your support entitlement.

Unfortunately I cannot collect support data, as I don't have anymore a woking installation.

I finally worked out to get a previous installation-file (workstation pro 15.0.0) (which was not easy to find, as I had to find a way over my download history).

Workstation 15.0.0. works here again, but I will not proceed to 15.5 until that issue is fixed.

I use workstation for my document management system (which runs under Windows only) and for some time I feared that I had lost all of the documents.

Hello, exact same problem here with ubuntu 19.04, i have tried on 2 computers, and it has failed on both.

I have tried to manually remove any files from previous install before trying again, but no success.

I have successfully reinstalled 15.1.0 after i had to clean the mess left by the aborted 15.5 install.

Hint for the dev team : try to install Worstation 15.5 on a clean linux install, you should experience the problem.

I had the same failure trying to upgrade WS 15.1 to 15,5 under Manjaro.   I have attached the vmware-installer log (compressed with tar) - perhaps it will help the developers.

Srill fails for me after export LC_ALL=C.    The GUI never comes up.   I have installed it under Windows without a problem.  I'll wait for VMware WS 16 when WS will be compatible with Hyper-V - right?.   Actually, I don't have any complaints about WS 15.1 under Manjaro Linux with kernel 5.3.

I am on Ubuntu 19.04 under KDE, both computer use nvidia card with nvidia proprietary drivers.

One of the computer is freshly installed from scratch, so there is no weird program or configuration done.

One thing that can matters is locale :

LANG=fr_FR.UTF-8

LANGUAGE=fr:en_US

I am sorry, i have reinstalled 15.1 without saving log.

Thanks for searching

I think @superduke31 has found a common denominator: I'm also running with a fr_FR.UTF-8 locale.

If I set LC_ALL=C before running the installer, then the upgrade proceeds successfully:

--8<-

# export LC_ALL=C

# ./VMware-Workstation-Full-15.5.0-14665864.x86_64.bundle

This issue caused by some multi-language environment that has been identified.

currently there are two workaround can work fine:

1. Set or export LC_ALL=C before running the installer, then the upgrade proceeds successfully. Thanks @superduke31 @j2rome.

2. Change the OS Region & Language to English. then the upgrade proceeds successfully. After a successful installation/upgrading,  you could switch back to any language you prefer to continue to use workstation.

Thanks a lot for you guys for your great enthusiasm for workstation. Feel free to let us know if you have any concerns on workstation.

Hello I confirm....

VMWare Team not tested installation procedure in another langage of English......

like mentionned before :

enter in a terminal :

LC_ALL=C

after change your langage to "English" in your setting

make the install :

sudo sh VMware-Workstation-Full-15.5.0-14665864.x86_64.bundle

and change your langage to yours

Working for me now

Thanks everybody
