VSphere licenses

Good afternoon,

I would like to clarify a question regarding licenses in vmware, is each license attached to a specific version?

I mean if I have a vcenter server, does the license go attach to version 6.5, or does that license also work for a 6.7 version of vcenter?

Licenses usually specify a major version of a platform, for example vSphere 6.x. The license would then apply to 6.0, 6.5, or 6.7.

Ok ok, I understand, if I have a vsphere 6.x license, it applies the same for versions 6.0 6.5 and 6.7 for what you're saying.

This is the same for esxi hosts, I imagine

Hmm.... i would say the answer is "it depends" Smiley Happy

From a technical standpoint the "yes" is right and the vSphere 6 license key work for every 6.x version.

Its a "no or depends" from a legal standpoint. If you bought vSphere 6 three years ago with 1Y subscription you are only allowed to run 6.5, 6.0 and older but not 6.7 because your subscription timed out before the release of 6.7.

For me your question was not totaly clear and i often have to deal with customer who runs out of subscription.

Regards,

Joerg
