Virtual Machines on vSphere- DMDirectPath I/O Passthrough

    PEANG_SUY Lurker

      Dear All VMware Expert,

We have installed virtual machine guest within VMware ESXi, 6.5.0, 8294253 . We connected Fiber Channel attached Tape (HP MSL2024) devices passthrough to virtual machine within ESXi host. One issue happened while we restart or PowerOn the virtual machine the ESXi host always restart too.

i am notifies that the memory of virtual machine guest has growing and always consumed 100%.

Here is physical server are running esxi host.

      • Hypervisor:VMware ESXi, 6.5.0, 8294253
      • Model:ProLiant DL380p Gen8
      • Processor Type:Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2650 0 @ 2.00GHz
      • Memory: 96 GB

      My question

      1. How to configure VM Setting in passthrough mode?

      2. Does Fiber Channel attached Tape devices (passthrough) are supporte by VMware?

          1) Here's how to configure VMDirectPath I/O VMware Knowledge Base

Note: When the device is assigned, the virtual machine must have a memory reservation for the full configured memory size.

          • VMware does not provide support for backup tape drives and tape library devices or their functionality on ESXi/ESX hosts.
          • The functionality of the tape library and the backup software in conjunction with VMware ESXi/ESX is partner-supported.
          • VMware assumes that the third-party vendor has completed necessary validation to support this configuration in a production environment.
          • VMware does not maintain a hardware compatibility guide that includes tested tape devices.
