Harddrive noise chatter when there is no disk access.

Hello,

Running Esxi 6.7 and I've been having HD noise chatter (oscillating head movement) when the VM is performing no disk IO. This issue also exists on Esxi 6.0.

If I shut the VM down the noise chatter (rapid head movement) stops. Restart the VM in 10 to 30 minutes the noise chatter starts up again and doesn't stop until I shut the VM down again. The chatter goes in cycles, chatter for 5 seconds, then quite for 2, chatter for 5 seconds, then quite for 2, etc.

Anyone have any idea what is causing this unnecessary head movement (chatter) and how to stop it?

The VM is Opensuse 14.3

The drives are mounted as follows:

/dev/sdb1        /mnt/diskp      ext4    defaults 0 0

/dev/sdc1        /mnt/disk1      ext4    defaults 0 0

/dev/sdd1        /mnt/disk2      ext4    defaults 0 0

/dev/sde1        /mnt/media1     ext4    defaults 0 0

Using command line tool: dstat shows no significant read/write operations taking place.
