The P408i-a SR controller with 2 GB flash-backed write cache (FBWC), and the battery should work just fine.

Whenever you are looking for hardware, ensure compatibility with the ESXi version you intend to use.

Helpful resources in this case are:

VMware from HPE Certification and Support | Hewlett Packard Enterprise

HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen10 Server (QuickSpecs/a00021852enw.pdf)

HPE Smart Array P408i-a SR Gen10 Controller

Welcome to the Community,

Can you confirm that you are using the HPE customized ESXi installation image, which contains the required RAID controller drivers?

HPE - like other major vendors - provide a customized ESXi installation image with additional drivers, and tools. This image is available from the VMware website (see Custom Images), or you need create your own one by injecting the drivers into the native VMware image.

Anyway, the "S100i" controller is a so called Software RAID controller, which isn't supported. In order to use your disks/SSDs in a RAID set, you need a hardware RAID controller.

The supplier offers a Raid Controller type P408i-a SR. Is this the best solution?

- P408i-a SR Gen10 raid controller

- HPE ML350 Gen10 LFF AROC Cable Kit

- 96W Smart Storage Battery (P01367-B21)
