A fault has occurred causing a virtual CPU to enter the shutdown state.

Ive just received this error on one of my VM's :

A fault has occurred causing a virtual CPU to enter the shutdown state. If this fault had occurred outside of a virtual machine, it would have caused the physical machine to restart. The shutdown state can be reached by incorrectly configuring the virtual machine, a bug in the guest operating system, or a problem in VMware Workstation.

The VM was running fine when I powered it off last night. My other VM still works fine.

I'm not sure whether there was a windows update last night or night. I have restored the host back to the last restore point I have which was 4 days ago, but this has made no difference.

Any help would be very much appreciated

Cheers

Also,

Ive turned on 'Full' in Gather debugging information, and now I also get this:

VMware Workstation unrecoverable error: (vcpu-0)

vcpu-0:ASSERT vmcore/vmm/cpu/segment.c:691 bugNr=19580

A log file is available in "C:\Users\scopesc\Documents\Virtual Machines\Windows 7 (32Bit) - Rockwell_V01_02\vmware.log".

You can request support.

To collect data to submit to VMware support, choose "Collect Support Data" from the Help menu.

You can also run the "vm-support" script in the Workstation folder directly.

We will respond on the basis of your support entitlement.

Attached is the log file

Did you find a resolution to this problem? I"m having an issue on a Win 7 VM running on a Win 10 host after some windows updates are applied.

Hi,

Sorry I didn't find a resolution. I ended up using a previous backup of the VM and then brought it back up to date

Hello, Scopesy

Based on the log, it looks your WS is old. Could you please update to latest version(15.1.0) for trying?  Thanks again to let us know whether it works for you or not.

Thanks

Thanks for providing that logfile with full debugging enabled... It provides a great amount of helpful information.

A lot of the information in there aligns very closely with a known guest software incompatibility we've seen several times before.  It could affect any virtual machine which has:

1) Windows 7 32-bit with recent updates installed,

2) An old driver installed – most often it would be a copy-protection driver used by software protected by Aladdin Systems HASP or some other copy-protection scheme, or old versions of antivirus programs; and

A VM meeting both of these conditions might encounter this fault during startup.  The problem might surface for the first time after you install Windows updates or when you install some piece of copy-protected software or antivirus software inside the guest.

The problem arises due to a particularly dangerous "hook" technique used by certain old kernel drivers which is incompatible with recent Windows 7 x32 updates.  64-bit versions of Windows are not affected by this particular problem – although 64-bit versions can certainly fail with a similar-looking error message for other reasons!

The trace in your log file looks almost identical to a trace we've had in a Support Request involving the haspnt.sys device driver used for copy-protection... It looks so very similar that I would be inclined to suggest that it's very likely the exact same cause.

Resolving the problem will require either refraining from installing Win7 updates, or updating/uninstalling the software which is using the problematic driver.

Hope this helps!
