VM Won't boot after expanding disk (Help recovering files!)

Hi all,

I recently expanded the disk in the VM settings from 40 to 80gb. Now, it suddenly won't boot at all. Nothing happened in between those two steps. I expanded the disk then tried to boot and it failed.

I get this error:

The VMware Tools power-on script did not run successfully in this virtual machine. If you have configured a custom power-on script in this virtual machine, make sure that it contains no errors. You can also submit a support request to report this issue

I didn't configure any custom power-on scripts.

and the terminal shows the following errors:

[failed] Failed to start Create Volatile Files and Directories. See 'systemct1 status systemd-tmpfiles-setup.service' for details.

Starting update UTMP about System Boot/Shutdown...

then a bunch of [FAILED] Failed to start network name resolution.

I really have no clue what to try and can't find that file it's referencing anywhere. Any ideas would be a huge help.

Even if I could just get my files off of it, that's fine. I'm just concerned about a few things I don't have backed up.

Welcome to the Community,

that's the first time that I see this behavior.

Please post a complete list of all the files in the VM's folder (i.e. the text output of dir *.*, or - in case of a linux host - ls -lisa), and attach the VM's current vmware.log file to a reply post.

I cannot see anything wrong on the Hypervisor side, so I'd recommend that you try searching in the Linux forums, and/or ask for help there.

Searching these forums, it seems that you are not alone with similar issue (see e.g. https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=281915).
