HCX Appliance Backup

Has anyone managed to successfully back up the HCX appliance while it is powered on? Any snapshot, vmotion etc is enough to kill it (similar to the cloud gateway appliance)

Hello,

You shouldn't see any issues while taking a snapshot for the HCX appliances. Does the VM hang after taking the snapshot? What do you do to recover it?

Its not that you shouldn't see any issues its not supported 'yet'!

The HCX is far easier to snapshot than the VCG

For hcx manager, customers can take back ups via appliance management page.

HCX Manager/IX/L2C appliances can also have snapshots , but make sure snapshot size doesn't grow over time.

So essentially snapshotting any HCX VM should not be a problem until we ensure that it is not kept around for a long time

However, Restoring from back up is better than reverting to snapshot.

Hi there is a difference between not being a problem and supported. You can snapshot NSX appliances but this is not supported because it can take down the virtual network. At the moment we now use the in built backup for the HCX appliance. just waiting for a backup to feature in the VCG as well because that does not support snapshot at all or may result in a broken appliance.

From the several calls we have had with VMware the only supported method now is via the appliance and not third party snapshots. Just waiting for more updates and features, the hcx since we have had it deployed has been updated many times.
