All VMDK files are renamed as *FLAT*.vmdk

Dear Team,

We are using vmware 5.0 version. Our storage is reconnected with the host and all the virtual machines are not powering on now. All VMs are located in SAN storage and the HA was configured. We found in the datastore that all the vmdk files are renamed and none of the VMs are powering on now. We are getting the error message as "An unexpected error was received from the ESX host while powering on VM vm-90."

Please suggest for a solution.

Thanks & Regards,

Anoop.

Virtual disks consist of 2 files, a descriptor/header .vmdk file, and the data .vmdk file (flat.vmdk, delta.vmdk, or separse.vmdk).

The latter are usually hidden in the Datastore Browser, and only show up in case the descriptor files got lost, or corrupted. However, depending on what happened, it should be possible to recreate the descriptor files.

To get an overview, please run

ls -elisaR > filelist.txt

from the affected datastore's root folder (i.e. /vmfs/volumes/<datastore-name>/), and attach the resulting filelist.txt to a reply post.

André
