During the upgrade of the NSX Manager, this component will be inaccessible for some time. That means, some administrative tasks are not possible during the upgrade (for example: creating new edge gateways or logical switches, etc.).
But existing networks, edge gateways or DLRs continue to function. So a customer can start new VMs in vCloud Director and connect to the existing networks and the whole network traffic is not affected, but the customer can't create new org or vApp networks or make changes to edge gateways, distributed logical routers or to the DFW. The network self-service functions are therefore severely restricted.
Therefore, we always schedule such maintenance work outside office hours and inform customers that these self services are only of limited use during maintenance work.
But this is only true for the NSX Manager upgrade, because it contains all NSX configurations. If you upgrade the controller cluster after the NSX Manager upgrade, there will be no service impact.
