Workstation Pro can not create new VM

Hi!

I recently bought a new laptop and installed Workstation Pro 14. Old virtual machines which I created on my previous laptop with Workstation pro 12 are running, but I cant create new ones. The program is throwing error messages as seen below. The error message is thrown instantly after clicking on the create new virtual machine button, so theres a problem in the creation first way.

error_message.png

Since I couldnt solve the problem I installed the demo version for Workstation pro 15. Same problem.

I attached the mentioned logfile. Does anybody know what causes this problem?

The old laptop was running on Windows 7 with Workstation 12. The new one is running on Windows 10 pro with Workstation 14.

Some Hardware infos for understanding:

Fujitsu Lifebook U758

processor:     Intel Core i7-8650U vPro

memory module:     2x 16 GB DDR4, 2.400 MHz, SO DIMM

display:  3.640x2.160 pixel (4k)

Is the problem a common one caused by the new hardware? If workstation pro 15 definitely solves my problems I will buy and install this version.

There is a problem with the upper toolbar as well. Beside the menu button no tool button like the shortcut for creating a new vm is shown. The menuoptions and tools have to be openend and selected via the menu. The toolbar loooks like shown below:

I suppose there is some problem with the screen resolution, so it can not present the tool bar.

Thanks in advance!

See WS 15 VMware Workstation unrecoverable error: (vmui) MEM_ALLOC bora\apps\lib\wui\control\cnxHostsCom...  for what I have tried.  My problem creating new VMs in WS15 & WS14  extends to Adding New Devices to existing VMs and viewing the Settings of a running VM.

Unfortunately, no. I encountered problem in a trial version WS15 because VMWare Store will not allow me to purchase upgrade from WS14 to WS15.  Error is "Invalid length code" on my Zip Code (nnnnn and nnnnn-nnnn forms both fail).    Trying to get that resolved so I can get support and open a case on problem.

Hi,

Though I can't comment on support request, looks like VMware is already aware of the issue and are trying to resolve it. See wjwj's reply.

Hi ppound,

Thanks for your reply.

Can you connect to our GSS(Global Support Services)?

GSS can help you to open a SR(Service Request), it will give us more helps to track this issue.

Before that, would you please to ask me some questions? These can help us to analyse the issue.

* Can the issue be always reproduced? if yes, can you list the steps to reproduce?

* What is the host OS? Which version is it?

* What is the language and region setting? Because I noticed another customer who meet the same problem and his system language may be Spanish.

* What is the hardware information?

* What is the display settings? e.g. how many monitors do you have? What are the DPI and resolution for each monitor?

* What are the third party products used in the environment? Do you suspect the 3rd party product to cause?

Best Regards

I will open an issue on GSS. Do you have any link? Because it's my first time.

Just clarifying the issues:

  • Missing icons in toolbars
  • Missing VM library bar
  • Missing thumbnails in thumbnails bar
  • Missing icons in devices
  • Vmware workstation will crash if I try to enable thumbnails bar and open any perfectly working machine

* Can the issue be always reproduced? The issue became present after what I think was one of the last windows update. After that point the issue is always reproduced rendering the VMware GUI unstable (crash).

* What is the host OS? Which version is it? Windows 10 Home v.1809 Build 17763.379

* What is the language and region setting? Italian

* What is the hardware information? Intel Core i5-5200U@2.20GHz; 16GB RAM, AMD R7 M360

* What is the display settings? 1360x768 on 1920x1080; 60Hz

* What are the third party products used in the environment? Only Avira antivirus but it was always installed and never caused such problems.

Hi all,

Is the issue still exist? It can't reproduce in my local workspace.

ppound

I noticed your OS version is 1809 Build 17763.379, and the Microsoft has a bug fix about the icon on April 2, 2019, KB4490481 which is OS Build 17763.404

It says:

Here is the issue brief: "Addresses an issue that prevents the operating system from loading new icon files if it encounters a badly formatted icon file. "

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4490481/windows-10-update-kb4490481

You can try to update your host OS, although I am not sure.

Hi, sorry for the late reply but for some reason I didn't received the notification.

hzuo yes, the issue is still present, even after a system update and a vmware workstation upgrade.

I'm having trouble as well. I'm using Workstation Pro 15.1 on Windows 10 Pro 1903 clean installed on a Dell Precision 7530. My issue comes at the end of wizard. If I try did customize the options add creation, it'll keep giving me a generic unknown error and refuse to let me leave the wizard. I have to force close Workstation to get out.

However, if I accept everything and just click OK, it'll create the VM. I can then go into settings and change whatever with no problems.

Has anyone else had this issue?

Thanks!
