A question about uplink port group architecture. Why "uplink" exist in uplink port group?

In vsphere-esxi-vcenter-server-65-networking-guide document page 30 (https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-vSphere/6.5/vsphere-esxi-vcenter-server-65-networking-guide.pdf), it introduce uplink port group.

Base on the description, uplink port group could divide to three levels

      level-1: uplink port group

      level-2: uplink

      level-3: uplink port

But compare with distributed port group, there are only tow levels

      level-1: distributed port group

      level-2: distributed port

Why the level "uplink" in uplink port group? Is there any special purpose?
